December 2016

Dear <<First Name>>,

December is a busy time for all of us, so our Club's program this month is focused on celebrating the holidays. You are invited to our ONCE A YEAR Annual General Meeting and Holiday Party on the evening of December 14th. The Hallesches Haus, a "very Berlin" venue in Kreuzberg owned by two women (one American, one German) will host the cosy evening - agenda includes a short business meeting, a great keynote speaker and lots of fun and socializing (see details in the Featured Event below).

We also have the daytime Holiday Cookies Exchange, an evening Holiday House Concert with Duncan Galloway, and a "Christmas Market Crawl" visiting some of Berlin's prettiest Christmas markets throughout the month.

December is also renewals time for your membership. Members whose membership is due for renewal at the end of 2016 will receive your renewal notice in the next week.  Please make your payment by the end of the year either via bank transfer or PayPal to our Club's account which is "president@awcberlin.org". We appreciate your continued engagement.

I wish you a beautiful holiday season and "ein Guten Rutsch" into the new year (Germans wish each other "a good slide" into the new year).

love,
My-Linh

You are cordially invited to our Annual General Meeting and Holiday Party. You will hear club reports, plans for 2017 and voting on the new Board of Directors 2017. Guests are invited to attend only one general meeting before joining the Club.

Our keynote speaker is Olivia Schofield. Olivia competed against 35,000 speakers to win the coveted position of Top Woman Speaker at Bally’s Hotel in Las Vegas 2011, at The World Championship of Public Speaking.  A Londoner living in Berlin, Olivia learnt her craft in the theatre; complementing her training with a First Class Honours Degree in Communication and Linguistics from Middlesex University.  Olivia has nearly 20 years experience in production and sales for media companies including the BBC, ITV Studios and Thomson Reuters. She has worked in both Europe and The States giving keynotes and workshops to audiences of up to 2,000.

After the business meeting, we will have a festive reception to celebrate the holidays.  Cost is 15 Euro per person includes a welcome drink, small plate buffet and water.  There will be a cash bar for other drinks.

Activities - December 2016

Weekend/Evening:

Christmas Market - Schloss CharlottenburgSaturday, December 3rd, 2-5pm. The baroque Charlottenburg Palace is our second stop on our "Christmas Market Crawl" and is a sumptuous backdrop for this Christmas market in City West. An elaborate light installation bathes the market, the palace, the trees and decorative fence of the palace in a romantic glow.

Bring your kids to this family-friendly Christmas market. The Winterwald (winter forest) in front of the small orangery offers magical attractions for children, including a nostalgic carousel, an air swing and a small railway. In the Märchenzelt (fairy tale tent) organised by the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, the little ones can try their hand at arts and crafts. For Details, click here.  RSVP to My-Linh at president@awcberlin.org.

Domäne Dahlem Advent Market - Sunday, December 11th, 2pm-4pm. Fun for the whole family! The last stop on our "Christmas Market Crawl", Domäne Dahlem is an open-air agricultural and food museum with a focus on ecology. The former manor dating back more than 800 years helps visitors understand the journey of foodstuffs from field to the dinner table and offers the ideal backdrop for an atmospheric Christmas market. Arts and crafts are the focus on each of the four weekends of Advent. Glassblowers, blacksmiths, florists, leather craftsmen, potters, milliners, weavers, doll makers and musical instrument makers offer their handmade products in the family-friendly environment. We will meet at the entrance at 2pm and go in together. For details, click here. RSVP to My-Linh at president@awcberlin.org.

Holiday Dinner & Concert with Duncan Galloway - Saturday, December 17th, 7pm -10pm. Open to partners and guests! Back by popular demand, Duncan Galloway and his wife, AWC member Bon-Hi Kim will host us for a beautiful evening of holiday music and cheer.  Duncan will give an intimate concert of Christmas Carols and other known classics. Cost is 55€ per person, 25€ for children under 12.  For details, click here. Address will be provided upon registration. RSVP to Chris at chris@kdkrueger.de.

Daytime:

Christmas Market - Gendarmenmarkt - Thursday, December 1, 12-2pm. We will start our “Christmas Markets Crawl” with the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market – one of the nicest in Berlin. Let’s meet at 12pm (noon) at the main entrance and go in together. We’ll shop and have lunch at the many stands and restaurants inside. If you like it, you could come back at night for the pretty lighting. For Details, click hereRSVP to My-Linh at president@awcberlin.org.

Designer Outlet Shopping - Winter Sale - Thursday, December 8, 11am - 2:00pm. Just 30 minutes from Berlin City Center is the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet Berlin, where you will find your favorite designer brands at up to 70%* off of the recommended retail price, all year round. There is something for everyone:  iconic fashion brands like Escada, Michael Kors and Hugo Boss to sporting labels like Nike and Adidas, and high-street favorites, like Guess and Desigual. The whole Center is decorated for Christmas.

Our carpools will meet at Theodor-Heuss-Platz (U2) – parking lot in front of the restaurant Block House.  We will receive a day-VIP card which gives an additional 10% discount to the already low outlet prices and a gift voucher for 2.50 euro at restaurants/cafes. Click here for details and please RSVP to Nisha at shopping@awcberlin.org and let her know if you would drive and how many you could take, or if you need a ride with the carpool.

Daytime Book Club - Friday, December 16, 10:30am - 12:30pm. Our Book Club alternates between daytime and evening meetings every other month.  This accommodates our members’ work schedules and also allows for bi-monthly participation.

December's selection is Pulitzer Prize winning novel "The Sympathizer" written by Viet Thanh Nguyen. "The Sympathizer" is a sweeping epic of love and betrayal. The narrator, a communist double agent, is a “man of two minds,” a half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon, and while building a new life with other Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles is secretly reporting back to his communist superiors in Vietnam. The Sympathizer is a blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping espionage novel, and a powerful story of love and friendship.

Holiday Cookies Exchange - Friday, December 16, 2016, 12:30pm-2:30pm.  One of our favourite things about the Holidays - Cookies! Bring your favorite homemade cookies to exchange. We’ll have wonderful cookies, some fun caroling and a whole lot of holiday cheer. For Details, click here.  RSVP to Nicki at herbers@kabelmail.de

Weekly German Conversations - AWC BERLIN is proud to now offer its members TWO different groups (details below). Come every week or whenever you can, you don’t have to RSVP, just show up – there will always be a group of us conversing in German. A safe place to practice and develop your skills; sometimes we are joined by AWC Berlin members who are native German speakers and sometimes we teach ourselves. But, be assured it will always be a fun and lively discussion. Please direct your questions to german@awcberlin.org

German Conversations West: We meet at Wiener Conditorei (Truman Plaza) in Dahlem Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am-12pm.  Click here for more details.

German Conversations East: Our first meeting will be Monday, November 28th! We meet Mondays from 12:30 to about 2 pm or 2:30pm at Schiller Backstage & Deli near Potsdamer Platz. For information on German Conversations East, kindly contact Christine Wills at wills@banti.org. Christine will facilitate the meetings by bringing along photocopies and/or sending you scans from a book that she likes. There are 40 small and manageable chapters, each introducing a grammatical concept and vocabulary "family." Plus, there's a realistic dialogue that incorporates that chapter's concepts. Here's a fun opportunity to brush up on your German!

BEADING GROUP, led by Susanne Ollmann, welcomes new and established beaders.  We alternate meeting at one another's homes throughout the month, occasionally go shopping for beadmaking tools, stones, and other pieces.  Come discover a craft that is therapeutic, aesthetic, and offers great possibilities for personalized gift-making.  Please contact Susanne Ollmann at susanne.ollmann@gmail.com.

REPORT BACK on FAWCO REGION 5 (Germany & Austria) MEETING IN BERLIN:
Our Club hosted a successful FAWCO Region 5 (Germany & Austria) meeting on Nov 11-13, 2016 with over 40 participants from out-of-town representing 13 clubs from Germany, Austria, France, Denmark, Lebanon, Ireland, and The Netherlands, and 10 AWC members. After some fun pre-meeting touring, we started with a welcome dinner at Villa del Sol and continued for two full days of meeting on Saturday and Sunday. The agenda included Introduction to FAWCO, Clubs Working Sessions, presentations on Aging with Grace and Dignity and Successful Social Media for Clubs.  AWC Berlin member Molly Brown moderated a lively and informative panel on Refugees Integration through Education.  It was worth the hard work to hear feedback like "inspiring ... informative ... fun". Big THANKS to all the AWC volunteers, particularly Rose Finlay the registrar and Nicki Herbers who prepared an amazing amount of finger foods while not feeling well.
