Debden Park High School launches annual reading mentoring scheme
Debden Park High School has launched this year's Reading Mentor Scheme which sees selected Year 7 students paired with Year 10 students to improve their progress in

This year - the third year that the school has run the initiative - the scheme has expanded with some Year 12 students having volunteered their time to assist Year 9 students aiming higher in literacy by improving their reading.

Also Year 8 students are taking part in small group reading sessions during form time with Teaching Assistants which means  every year group will be taking part in one way or another.

Learning Resources Centre (LRC) manager Kelly Longman said: "The scheme uses the very successful Accelerated Reader Programme which is a computer programme that helps manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice.

"The students choose a book at their own level and read it at their own pace. When finished, the student takes a short quiz on the computer. Passing the quiz is an indication that the student understood what was read.

"The Accelerated Reading Programme gives children, teachers, and the LRC Manager feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher and LRC Manager then use to help each child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.

"Year 7 students also benefit from a fantastic rewards scheme."
