Introducing ACJU - Part II
This week we would be introducing the ACJU Maktab Division.

ACJU Maktab Division
The idea of a Maktab is not a new one for Sri Lanka. As far back as 1969, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, Ceylon in its publication “A Centenary Volume of Education in Ceylon – 1969” carries an article by Dr. A. M. A. Azeez on 'The Muslim Philosophy of Education' in which he explains the Islamic elementary education system, the 'Maktab'. Established with the aim of cultivating an enthusiasm amongst students towards learning the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and the Islamic way which in turn would benefit the society; the 'Maktab' project for the development of Qur'an Madrasah is by far the biggest project carried out by the ACJU. Similar Maktab Projects are currently conducted in England, Thailand, South Africa, India, Pakistan and many other countries.

The Maktab project was launched by the ACJU in 2011, with the objective of standardizing the process in all Madrasahs enabling students to read the Al Qur'an with Tajweed, learn Islamic etiquette & the foundations of Islam and gain familiarity of the Qur'anic Arabic Language within a short period of time, in a structured manner.

The project is now in place in Masjids around the island with classes currently conducted at four grade levels, which over the next years will increase as the students advance through the syllabus.

Ibn 'Abbas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: There is no virtue more to the liking of Allah in any day than in these days, that is, the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. They (the Companions) asked: Messenger of Allah, not even the struggle in the path of Allah (Jihad) ? He said: (Yes), not even the struggle in the path of Allah, except a man who goes out (in the path of Allah) with his life and property, and does not return with any of them.

Sunan Abi Dawud 2440

Can a woman cover her face in the state of Ihram?

The Prophet () has prohibited a woman from covering her face (wearing the Niqaab) while she is in the state of Ihram. In this regard, it is narrated in a tradition from Abdullah bin Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu)  that the Messenger of Allah ()  said: ‘A woman in Ihram must not wear the Niqaab and must not wear gloves’
(Tirmidhi who said it was Sahih (sound)).

In the Hadith of Sahih Al Bukhari, it is narrated by Abdullah bin Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu) that the Prophet () said, ‘A woman in the state of Ihram must not put the Niqaab on her face’.
(Sahih Al Bukhari).

In another tradition narrated by Aishah (Radhiyallahu Anha) it is mentioned that she said, ‘The riders (performing Hajj) used to pass by us while we were with the Messenger of Allah () in the state of Ihram. When they passed in front of us, one of us would lower her Jilbaab (overgarment) from her head over her face, and when they went away, we uncovered the face.
(Ahmad;Abu Dawood; Ibn Majah).

Based upon this tradition, the scholars have explained that women will not cover their face while in Ihram. However, when strangers (ghair Mahram -  non blood relatives) pass in front of them, they can lower their Jilbaab (over garment / sheets) over their faces, in a manner that the cloth does not touch the face.
And Allah Knows Best.
