2017 Fishing Season is Upon Us!
We are looking forward to a great 2017
As we head into the 2017 fishing season I'm looking forward to an excellent resident trout year. As many of you know 2016 was the best year in the last half dozen. This winter has been mild and I expect to have good numbers of fish in all year classes. Along with that I believe that bug activity will be quite strong also. As I look at the 2017 calendar the prime dry fly months of May and June have substantial rebooking. If you are date or guide specific give us a call and get the days you want.

As I announced last newsletter we now have the ability to fish the Pine River. We have only one of two tags allowing commercial guiding. It's a great river, read below.

The Little Band of Ottawa Indians proposed resistance weir has been slowed down. Thanks to all of you that made your concerns known. The USFS has put the proposal back to LRBO for more study. It looks like it won't happen this year. Stay tuned for more info, my guess is we aren't done.

This newsletter includes a new fly pattern of mine named the Closer. This bug lit them up last year, it can close the deal. It's an easy, simple tie that will put fish in the net for you.

There is also an overview of website changes that we have been working on all winter, see below for that information.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you at the Midwest Fly Fishing Show on March 10/11 and then leaving for three weeks in Argentina!

Cherie, Jon, Ed, Jeff, Russ and I all thank you for your support. As alway we will do our best to deserve it.

We look forward to guiding you on Any River...Anytime.

Bug Hatches-A New Blog Series from Hawkins Outfitters

Hawkins Outfitters has launched a series of Blogs about the  major hatches we see on our Northern Michigan rivers. The first bug in our series is the Isonychia, my favorite mayfly.

In the articles we will discuss life cycles, patterns, how to fish the hatch and how to find good water for that insect.

Hexes are next!

If you have any input and/or bugs you would like us to addressed please send me an email.

Fish the Pine River!

Hawkins Outfitters now holds one of only two permits to fish the Pine River. The Pine is the fastest flowing and one of the coldest rivers in the Lower Peninsula. It's trout are all wild, no stocking. It has the best population of wild rainbows in Michigan, they fight like steelhead. The Pine has good early season streamer fishing and great hopper and hopper dropper fishing. As long as it's running clear it can be fished all season. Jon, Ed, Jeff and I all guide on it.

This is a great float and a unique river. We are limited to the number of days we can float it. If you have an interest in this unique, special fishery give Cherie a call.

Website Projects

Jon Ray and I have been hard at work this winter on the website. Most importantly we are working to make the site more mobile friendly. Working with PWB Marketing, our goal is to have the quickest loading mobile site possible.

In the future you will be able to access all of the valuable info we put on the site while on the go, 50% of our users are mobile or tablet users.  It's important for us to stream-line the site, so you can get what you want faster.

If you have any comments, positive or negative please send us an email.

Hot New Streamer Pattern by Chuck Hawkins

The Closer is the real deal! It's easy to tie, fun to fish and they eat it! Fish it on a 250 grain sink tip. Cast tight to structure, let it hover and retrieve with short strips and jerks. Not fast!

I tie it in olive/white, black, natural and white. In Argentina I use an orange boys and olive feather and deer hair, Pancora style.

It's a great little bug, simple and effective!
