Tap, filtered, alkaline, ionized, magnetic, spring, purified, carbonated, flavored… There are many names for drinking water.

The Institute of Medicine recommends about 11 and 15 cups of water a day (including food sources) for healthy adult women and men, respectively. This recommendation doesn’t account for physical activity, which would increase a person's daily water requirements. So, because people need a lot of water, it makes sense to choose a good source, right? 
Here are types of bottled water available:
  • Artesian water: comes from an artesian well that draws water from underground.
  • Mineral water: spring water that has at least 250 parts per million (ppm) of total dissolved solids (TDS), which are minerals like calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium.
  • Spring water: underground water that typically has about 50 ppm of TDS.
  • Naturally sparkling water: comes from a spring or artesian well and has natural carbonation in it. 
  • Purified water: Purified water comes from either underground or from tap water and it has no TDS.
This current decade has brought more concerns about health and the environment. People have been searching for alternative methods to have healthier lives. One example is the trend about alkaline bottled waters. The claim is that most brands are selling acidic drinking water bottles. Is that bad?

The pH of pure water is 7, which is neutral. When different minerals are added to water, its pH varies and becomes acidic or basic (alkaline). 

The chemical character of groundwater is influenced by the minerals and gasses reacting with water in its relatively slow passage through the rocks. 

  1. Very commonly, iron is dissolved from rocks and soils causing a low water pH. Water having a low pH tends to be corrosive and can dissolve more iron from pipes. 
  2. Copper is a health hazard at high levels and can be leached from plumbing by acidic water.
  3. Acidic water can also leach lead from pipes. Solid lead pipes were used in the early 1900s and can still be found in some old homes. Lead is considered a serious health threat. The recent crisis in Flint, Michigan, sounded the alarm on the dangers of lead contamination in drinking water. 
The U.S. EPA doesn’t regulate the pH level in drinking water, but it recommends levels from 6.5 to 8.5.


Corrosion of pipes is by far the greatest cause for concern.
  1. To neutralize the water supply, companies and the government add alkalizing compounds, like calcium, silica, potassium, magnesium, and bicarbonate. This is called hard water, meaning it contains high levels of dissolved minerals, especially calcium.
  2. Very hard water will leave a scaly deposit on the inside of pipes.
But extremely soft water may corrode metals, as explained previously.
According to the U.S. EPA, more than 90% of Americans receive their tap water from a public water system, which is subject to contamination, so public water is routinely disinfected with chlorine and other treatments.

Although, research has found that people using chlorinated drinking water have an increased risk of bladder, kidney, and rectal cancers.

There are many other harmful substances that can be found in water. Public drinking water utilities test their water regularly for harmful contaminants and are required to disclose the results. Here is information about Chicago's water.
After learning about your water options, let's see what you can do:

Don't worry about bottled water pH levels. The water you drink reaches your stomach. Stomach juices are highly acidic. Thus, when water passes through your stomach, it will always be acidic. Once water reaches your intestines it mixes with basic fluids, becoming alkaline. These shifts in pH levels of water happen regardless of its original pH. So before the water reaches your blood, your pH will have changed several times. The best way to balance your pH is with nutrition, hydration, and physical activity! 

Avoid bottled water. Drink filtered tap water. It is cheaper and it doesn’t come wrapped in plastic waste to fill up landfills. Also, landfills may provoke contamination of ground water by toxic liquids and leached chemicals.

Filter your water. You can filter out much of the chlorine or lead from your drinking water. Some filters are more effective than others at removing specific contaminants. Find the best filter for you here.

Use filtered water for your plants. Very hard water can cause mineral buildup in the soil, and if your home has a water softener, the extra sodium can be hazardous to plants as well.

Choose the best container for your water-to-go. Use reusable water bottles made from BPA-free plastic, stainless steel or glass. If you need to buy a plastic bottled water, don't leave it in the car on a hot day. Phthalate and bisphenol in the bottle could leach into the water.
