Dear Members,

It’s pretty darn cold outside lately, so I am sure you will enjoy the fact that this issue of FITT’s newsletter has lots of great snippets that you can sit back and read over a nice warm cuppa.
We’re delighted to be profiling one of our long standing FITT Management Committee members in this issue, Bridget Gray. Bridget is the Managing Director of Harvey Nash PLC and was previously FITT’s Networking Lead. She has recently moved over to the role of FITT Event Lead. So, we thought you’d like to find out a little bit about Bridget and what she loves about being in IT.
We’ve also got some great industry events to share with you this month.

We’re delighted to be staging more of our fantastic FITT Networking events in July, in conjunction with our FITT Gold Sponsor, Avanade. These are always great events, so I encourage you to take the time to come and meet with other like-minded men and women to hear from our fantastic speakers, network and enjoy a few drinks & canapes.
Gold Sponsor Cisco is also hosting the fourth and final episode in their Women Rock-IT Cisco TV Series. It’s a ‘don’t miss’ episode – so, make sure you don’t miss it!
We’ve also got details of the forthcoming GovHack Sydney event, being run by Hackathons Australia. These are fantastic events, where participants innovate and prototype using open government data… check it out, could be a lot of fun!
There’s also the #TechDiversity Gala Dinner coming up in early August. This is sure to be a great night of networking and a true celebration of diversity and what’s being achieved in this space across our industry. Make sure you’re there on the night!

I’d also like to welcome Michaeli Gotley, who is taking over my role as FITT’s Marketing Lead.
I see that my key legacy from my nine months in the role as FITT’s Marketing Lead is the new, ‘fresh’ branding that I developed for FITT, which has changed the way we ‘look’ - from our website and new-look newsletter, to our new communication templates, eDMs, email signatures, signage and overall branding.
While I have loved my time in this role, the opportunity to take on more challenges in a new management committee role of Industry Liaison Lead is very exciting. So, I now hand over the reins to Michaeli, who will lead our fantastic FITT Marketing team to achieve many more great things. I am really going to enjoy working with Michaeli, the FITT team and the entire FITT family in my new FITT role

What is your current role and what is your scope?

Managing Director of Harvey Nash PLC, and the Events Lead at FitT. Harvey Nash is HQ in the UK and listed on the London Stock Exchange, we are a global technical solutions and talent company. Harvey Nash is passionate about supporting innovation, equality, talent engagement, collaboration and gender balance in the workforce.

I joined Harvey Nash eight years ago to set up the Digital practice in Harvey Nash's London head office, as well as leading the Harvey Nash Global CIO practice. Five years ago, I came back to Australia to set up the Group’s APAC operations. We now have significant operations across ANZ, Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

2. What attracted you to a career in ICT?

My father is an Engineer, so I grew up in an environment where there was a genuine fascination around what makes things work, and how technical advances can change and improve the way in which we live. Once I started working within ICT, I quickly became addicted to the fast-paced changing world of technology and digital.

3. What has kept you in the ICT industry?

There is of course the constant learning and challenge of being part of the ICT Industry, but for me it is bigger than that.

It has allowed me to learn about different business markets, cultures and continually challenged my ways of thinking. As someone who enjoys travel and learning about people and the way societies works, my career in ICT and Digital has given me a wonderful platform to explore the world whilst enhancing a career I love, I feel very lucky.

I have been fortunate enough to work all over the globe with my career in ICT. I lived in the UK for 11 years which gave me exposure to the US and European markets. Then I had the opportunity to come home to Australia to set up our operations for the Asia Pac Region.

4. Have you had any high-points and low-points of your career? If so, can you please share?

At nineteen years old, I set up a business in the Healthcare sector, this was a very steep learning curve but ultimately creating something from nothing is a hugely rewarding journey.

Throughout my career I have experienced a series of high points, I feel setting up a new region for Harvey Nash, and ultimately making it a commercially valuable part of our global footprint, is particularly rewarding.

On reflection, a less positive phase was when employed by an organisation where I felt my personal values were not completely aligned with the business I was working for; either morally or professionally. This has really driven my belief and passion around the importance of values based hiring practices.

5. What does work life balance mean to you?

I think I have given up on work life balance, as I believe in these busy and fast paced times, it is often tricky to balance all elements of your life perfectly. I do however believe in work life integration.

I love my work and due to the global nature of the assignments we work on, I often find myself working irregular hours. However, I also make space in my life to spend quality time with my children where I make a truly conscious effort to switch off digitally and from work, I do not want to miss these precious moments of their life and development.

6. What ambitions, either personal or professional do you still want to achieve?

I am passionate about equality and diversity broadly, I am actively involved in a number of initiatives. It is not just a personal ambition, but I want to know that I am collaborating with a number of people towards positive change around addressing unconscious bias generally.

As a side note, I have a dream of owning a Villa in Tuscany with a private vineyard, so keep in touch with me, you never know!

7. If you were just starting out in your career, what’s the one piece of advice you'd give to yourself that’s taken from lessons learnt? Why this advice in particular?

Not to get too distracted, when things feel like they are a bit off track, it’s often those unexpected or at the time unwelcome diversions that get us ultimately in an exciting new direction.

8. Do you have any mantra or vision that you follow or which keeps you focused?

Prioritise and anything you really want is 100% possible, I believe if you want something enough you can make it happen!

9. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

One of my personal motivators to move back to Australia, was to be closer to the water, I love being close to the ocean, swimming, sailing and I am lucky that my little family embrace anything to do with the water.

I am also writing a book on my Dad at the moment, telling his story around his adventures flying in a single-engine plane over to PNG as a young man.

Hackathons Australia are holding GovHack Sydney, where participants innovate and prototype using open government data.

This includes apps, visualisations, websites and other cool solutions. Last year there were 2200 participants nation-wide and this year we want you to be part of it! GovHack Sydney will be held from 6pm Friday 29 July until 5pm Sunday 31 July at Stone and Chalk, and we would love to have you there!
