STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Olivia Broderick, Fall 2020/Spring 2021 TCP Student
"The most valuable experience that I've had as a TCP student has been the opportunity to work so closely with a team of fellow teachers and mentors as we move through our Practicum experience. Teaching in a new environment for the first time is always a challenge, and can be really nerve-wracking! But with TCP, we are surrounded by so much support and expertise and we are placed in an optimal position for success and for growth. I have learned so much from the TCP instructors, my teaching cohort, and our extraordinary mentor and I'm so grateful to the TCP team for giving me this opportunity to build my skills as an educator in a safe and collaborative learning environment!"

“For the past two years, I have had the privilege of serving as an instructor in the TESOL Certificate Program (TCP).  In that time, I have had an intimate opportunity to see what makes the TCP program truly exceptional.  All aspects of the program (i.e., from initial inquiries through the culminating events) are grounded in the premise of individualized care and treatment of each and every student."

REFLECTIONS ON THE TESOL CERTIFICATE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Donna DelPrete, Ph.D., TCP Master Mentor

“During my years as a mentor in the TESOL Certificate Program, one strongly held belief about teaching and learning has been reinforced - namely, that learning is a collaborative, bi-directional process. As mentors, we may see ourselves as seasoned teachers, but we are still lifelong learners. In the TESOL Certificate Program I have had the privilege to be a “teacher-learner,” - to borrow the words from Paulo Freire. I have learned a great deal from my mentees because together, as a cohesive group, we brainstorm lesson ideas, design communicative and meaningful activities, carefully plan their implementation, incorporate one another’s feedback , and finally deliver instruction on a Friday morning with welcoming smiles and pulsating energy that is felt even a remote environment. I have had mentees who were experienced teachers from other disciplines, as well as individuals who were newcomers. Despite our diverse educational and professional backgrounds, we come together as one, both inside a classroom (physically or remotely) and outside as we exchange ideas for upcoming lessons. In the end, we are one team that unites to provide our students with the most rewarding learning experience possible.”
