Be still, and know that I am God:
I will be exalted among the heathen,
I will be exalted in the earth. Psalms 46:10
  But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Be not therefore anxious for the morrow:
for the morrow will be anxious for itself.
Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.  Matthew 6:33-34

Many times we insert a scripture verse at the heading of our newsletter for the benefit of the reader.  This time we have inserted it as we deal with things and we sense what God is saying to us when “our” plans don’t necessarily line up with His.  Thank you so much for all the concern that has been shown for Catherine and the multitude of prayers…we are very grateful!  We delayed the sending of this newsletter as we knew we would have a doctor's appointment in early December and hoped we could share in further detail what the recent findings would be for Catherine.

A Look into our Lives

          On the Home Front:
With the unexpected time home we are doing some visiting and sharing as the Lord opens the doors.  It is a great joy for us to be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with family, and have the chance to indulge in our family’s traditional time of celebration.  We have so many things to be thankful for, and we do praise God for His goodness and faithfulness to us.  We wanted to highlight some of His blessings to us this past year.  Our time of ministry in Haiti continues to be one of great rewards and blessings.  We see so many different ways our time of helping and serving has made an impact for the kingdom of God.  We are grateful to God for the opportunity, and give Him thanks for His willingness to use us.  We give thanks to the Lord for His faithful provision.  It’s a blessing for us to watch how His mighty hand provides and stirs the hearts of those who partner with us.  2015 represents the addition of a new granddaughter, and our first daughter-in-law, both of these individuals have brought great joy and gratitude into our lives.  His wisdom in creating us in family units is so amazing.  As we have lived our lives in Nigeria and Haiti, it’s the small and simple things, that can be potentially taken for granted, that stand out to us as we spend time in the US over the Thanksgiving holiday.  Things like safe drinking water, abundant food, dependable electricity, and good roads all come to mind.

We are asked the question quite a bit just how long we’ll be in the U.S.?  We really don’t have an answer to this question as of now.  Our desire is to get to a point where we feel like we have a good understanding of what is going on with Catherine, and that we can properly manage the situation once we get back in Haiti.
          A word from Catherine:

Wow! Since returning to the U.S., I have truly felt the love and concern from many of you.  Every day, people are asking if we have any answers to my jaw problem.   In many situations in western societies, we are able to get quick answers.  In our seemingly, timely world, some things still take time.  It has taken a bit of time waiting for open dates for appointments and finding the right diagnostic services to get somewhere with the right information.  Although we don’t have all the answers, here are some answers that we do have.
  1. We began with blood tests to look for any deficiencies.  So far my blood tests show I am pretty healthy, except for one test that showed some kind of inflammation somewhere, but not specific enough to diagnose anything in particular.  A follow-up test showed this was of no concern now.
  2. The discomfort began in my teeth and gums too difficult to describe, followed by the slight involuntary jaw movement out of no where. The dentist and doctor both report that I do have beginning TMJ.  There is much optimism that a night guard and exercises will help avoiding progression towards a painful situation. I praise God that I have not had the jaw pain that so many others do with this condition; and my involuntary jaw movements seem to be slowing down.  I have been doing jaw exercises and practicing relaxing the jaw.
  3. My appointment with a biological dentist in St. Louis found a dangerously high volatile mercury filling in one tooth that could have caused the gum issue. The tooth was badly damaged by the filling so a crown is being prepared for that. It is really too soon to notice much difference with using the teeth to chew food.  Right after my initial visit of 1 1/2 hour testing various things, a time slot opened up the next day, so I am now mercury free on the entire left side. The dentist found no surprises.  PTL!  Another appointment is set for the right side on December 22nd.  I should have everything done before Christmas.  Again, another PTL!  Please pray that no surprises show up at my next visit.

As with anyone that is dealing with a health issue, there are good days and bad days, so your continue prayers are much appreciated. Please pray the dentist finds no surprises at my next visit.  Please pray for quick healing of all tissues as well as for financial provision to take care of all the necessary treatments.

In the attitude of Thanksgiving, which we celebrated: I am thankful that I have had more good days than bad.  I am thankful to have had the means to maintain good oral health that one doctor told me, “Whatever you are doing, it is helping.”  I am thankful for the opportunity to spend time with the grandchildren and a surprise visit with Josiah.

A song you may not have heard of before called "Joy Is Like The Rain" by Miriam Therese Winter has brought perspective in this difficult season in my life.  The song written during one of the lowest points on the mission field.  Are you experiencing a rainy, cloudy day or season or a powerful, unrelenting storm in life that brings all kinds of emotions and feelings?  Please allow this song to minister to your heart.  Even in the midst of our trials, Christ is there.  Click here to hear this beautiful song:

I saw rain drops on my window, Joy is like the rain.
Laughter runs across my pane, Slips away and comes again.
Joy is like the rain.

I saw clouds upon a mountain, Joy is like a cloud.
Sometimes silver, sometimes gray, Always sun not far away.
Joy is life a cloud.

I saw Christ in wind and thunder, Joy is tried by storm.
Christ asleep within my boat, Whipped by wind, yet still afloat.
Joy is tried by storm.

I saw rain drops on a river, Joy is like the rain,
Bit by bit the river grows, "till all at once it overflows.
Joy is like the rain.

          Fish Problem Solved:

With the help of some good ole Haitian and American ingenuity, we have got the fish project up and running and, kind of, back to normal.  As you can see by the pictures, we poured concrete pads under all six of the fish tanks.  We were also able to locate a special kind of silicone tape online that we could use to patch up the cracks in the tanks.  With the tanks now sitting on a solid foundation and having the ability to hold the water, we introduced the remaining fish back into their new and improved home.
As we shared last month, we did lose most of our fish.  Now we hope to replenish our tanks and start all over with a new batch of fingerlings.  A special thank you to the interested individuals who have helped with the cost of renovating and replenishing the fish for the aquaponics project, it’s such a blessing to have your partnership and encouragement!

One Starfish at a Time

          Danna Jeansimon Maken:

Danna is one of the newer girls who have joined the Consolation Center of Haiti (CCH) family.  Her story is all too common as she was found roaming the streets of Les Cayes and had been ababoned.  It’s not clear if she was abandoned by her family or was sold into a restavec situation and then abandoned by the people who were using her as a domestic slave.  It is rather clear that she has been neglected in the areas of education and over all care.  Her actions and personality traits display someone who has learned to survive,  Imagine being under 10 years of age, and the only person that you can count on to care for you is yourself.  Danna is now adjusting very well, and enjoys meeting people and socializing.  May God continue to pour out His love on her as she grows and matures in a safe and healthy environment.

Zachery & Olivia's Update

Already the time for our Christmas return is here and within just a few days we’ll be heading to the States to celebrate Christmas with both families. In the past few weeks, we’ve had some exciting and encouraging moments with the kids—particularly during our Sunday evening Bible Studies. If you follow our Facebook page, you most likely saw the clip of one of our studies and we've attached a photo of our most recent study. It isn’t just fun and games though, we’ve had some great discussions with the teens and the young children about important topics which have in return produced some great discussions. We love it when we see eagerness to follow God’s way and pursue righteousness. Please continue to pray for the boys and girls at CCH and the Joshua House as they continue to learn more about the Lord and His love for them.

As always, we encourage you to stay in touch on our blog to receive updates and photos
