HOW MUCH INFLUENCE should religious communities have in public life? Most Canadians think that people of faith have a role to play in politics, but no one can agree on the degree and type of influence. 

In June members of the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) will meet to discuss three Overtures: one asks the church to foster more discussion on biblical principles for Christian citizenship, and two ask the denomination to scale back its political engagement. WHAT DID KUYPER REALLY SAY?

THE U.S. OVERTURES use Kuyper’s principle of sphere sovereignty to argue that church agencies overstep their authority by engaging in political advocacy. But nothing is static; Kuyper’s principle is a dynamic one, lived out in real-life contexts. The church can and must serve the state as a good neighbour by nudging it to faithful practice of public justice. Speaking a prophetic word to the state doesn’t violate sphere sovereignty; in an organic society, that is the church’s task! Read more
