Catechist Formation
Recruiting Catechists
As we begin another academic year, catechetical leaders are busy preparing their catechetical plans. One of the most important and challenging tasks leaders are challenged with at the end of summer is recruiting catechists and team members. Joe Paprocki reminds us that we do more than recruit, we INVITE people to consider the call to be a catechist. He says:

I   = INITIATE a conversation.
N = NOTICE who lingers and seems curious about the happenings at faith formation sessions.
V = VALUE the time and the conversation shared
I  = INVITE these parents to help, even if it is just one time.
T = THANK everyone involved with the program.
E = ENCOURAGE everyone who enters into the catechetical space.

STEP Courses at Univ of Notre Dame
The University of Notre Dame offers nearly 60 online courses in Catholic doctrine, christian life, church history, liturgy and scripture in a program named STEP (Satellite Theological Education Program). Course are between four and seven weeks long and most are between 25 and 30 contact hours. Each course is structured around reading texts each week, posting to a discussion forum, chatting with classmates in real-time and weekly written short reflections. Registrations are open now for classes beginning August 31st. Visit to learn all the details and check out the catalog.
Catechist Formation Schedule
The new schedule of catechist classes will be ready shortly with 49 initial classes requested. Input is still being received. First class this year is August 29th. This year’s schedule and revised registration procedures will be posted on a new diocesan web page, which will permit frequent (weekly) additions and updates to the schedule. We will be implementing a different vendor for online registrations, which will permit us to return to the $15 fee. Online registration will require a credit card. In June we successfully implemented a payment by check method that we will continue to use as an alternative.
Faith Formation Day 2015 is our annual diocesan catechetical/ministry conference. It gathers 800-900 catechists and ministry volunteers who are involved in parish-based catechetical, pastoral care, liturgical, and other ministries. Some Catholic school educators also attend. The gathering is culturally-diverse beginning with prayer presided by the bishop and a bilingual (English/Spanish) keynote. The day continues with four breakout learning sessions of one-hour each. Each session has 25-35 distinct workshops spanning several different languages. Lunch is offered during the middle two-sessions with exhibits from Catholic publishers and others.

Faith Formation Day 2015 is the largest non-liturgical event in the Diocese of Orlando.
