Swimming Lessons
by Clair Fuller

Ingrid Coleman writes letters to her husband, Gil, about the truth of their marriage, but instead of giving them to him, she hides them in the thousands of books he has collected over the years. When Ingrid has written her final letter she disappears from a Dorset beach, leaving behind her beautiful but dilapidated house by the sea, her husband, and her two daughters, Flora and Nan.

Twelve years later, Gil thinks he sees Ingrid from a bookshop window, but he’s getting older and this unlikely sighting is chalked up to senility. Flora, who has never believed her mother drowned, returns home to care for her father and to try to finally discover what happened to Ingrid. But what Flora doesn’t realize is that the answers to her questions are hidden in the books that surround her. Scandalous and whip-smart, Swimming Lessons holds the Coleman family up to the light, exposing the mysterious truths of a passionate and troubled marriage.

Review from Good Reads
The Friends of the Library found a pot of gold this past December when they were granted a $150.00 award from the Community Foundation Rotary Endowment as an unrestricted grant in support of their mission. The grant represents a matching contribution made to The Friends organization by one or more Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Elk Rapids.

“In 1999, Rotary Charities made a gift of $2.5 million to the Community Foundation to establish the Rotary Endowment, creating a partnership between the two organizations that is reflective of the quality of philanthropic intent and integrity that makes this a wonderful place to live, work, and give. The opportunity for Rotarians to have their charitable giving matched by the Community Foundation through this Endowment makes an incredible difference for communities throughout the five-county region”.

The Friends are extremely grateful for this support to their organization and for their partnership with Rotary “to support strong, vibrant and healthy communities now and for generations to come”.

“Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.

The Railway Children

When we climbed the slopes of the cutting
We were eye-level with the white cups
Of the telegraph poles and the sizzling wires.

Like lovely freehand they curved for miles
East and miles west beyond us, sagging
Under their burden of swallows.

We were small and thought we knew nothing
Worth knowing. We thought words travelled the wires
In the shiny pouches of raindrops,

Each one seeded full with the light
Of the sky, the gleam of the lines, and ourselves
So infinitesimally scaled

We could stream through the eye of a needle.
~~Seamus Heaney
