Dear Y members,

As you are likely aware, the incidence of COVID cases in the state of Maryland is rising substantially, with recent daily case numbers setting records. As pointed out by many, including Governor Hogan, we know that social distancing, continuous anti-bacterial cleaning and proper use of masks are currently the best practices available to mitigate the risk of spreading the virus. With this in mind, effective this Wednesday, November 18, we are adjusting our policy to now require mask usage at the Y, without exceptions, unless one is in the swimming pool or the shower.

While in our family center Ys and Y swim centers, all individuals must wear a mask fully covering their nose and mouth at all times, including during cardio exercise. We understand that this is somewhat stricter than the state requirements, but we believe that it’s the right thing to do at this time to protect the health of our members and associates.

With this in mind and given the current surge in cases, I have instructed Y associates to firmly and unequivocally enforce our policy. I am sure you can understand that this can be a challenge for associates who are naturally inclined to be as helpful and accommodating as possible. As such, I hope that you respect and understand our policy and cooperate with our associates and fellow members in helping to prevent the spread of this disease by wearing your mask, and wearing it properly, at the Y. Please expect Y associates to require full compliance and to allow no exceptions.

As an active member myself, I know that wearing a mask during vigorous exercise can be tough. No one enjoys it. However, it’s a reality we all have to power through as individuals and as a Y community, for the common good.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation, understanding and engagement with the Y.

All the best,

John K. Hoey
President & CEO
