Class of 2021
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and is the perfect time to support the mental health of our community.

We invite you to participate in CHOC’s Check-in Challenge during May, Mental Health Awareness Month. Participants are encouraged to “check in” with themselves, as well as with others.

Here’s how the check-in challenge works: Each week in May, you’ll check in with a different key community group. Complete all five weeks; just pick one person or group to check in with; or simply make a commitment to check in with yourself this May.

  • Week 1 (May 3 – 9): Caregiver – Those who are always looking after others often put themselves last. Make them first on your list to check in with this week.
  • Week 2 (May 10 – 16) : Strong friends – Those in your life who you look up to for strength are often pillars for many others. Who is checking on them? Make it a point to check in on your “strong friends” this week.
  • Week 3 (May 17 – 23): Yourself – Who me? Yes, you. How are you really doing? What does it look like to check in with yourself? What are you doing to take care of yourself this week?
  • Week 4 (May 24 – 30): Neighbor – Maybe it’s time to do more than look away or wave when you see your neighbor. Introduce yourself and ask how they have been getting along during this time.
  • Week 5 (May 31 – June 6): Essential Workers – These are the people in our lives who are sometimes under-appreciated, who keep our world going. Think to check in on the grocery store clerk, your waiter, mail carrier and delivery person. Make them feel seen by asking how they are doing.

MAY

i-Ready Update

If your students are performing at an eighth grade level or below on their i-Ready diagnostic assessments, your student will automatically have access to personalized learning lessons that are geared specifically to your students’ strengths and learning needs. Tell your students to STRIVE for 45! Students who work on their i-Ready lessons for 45 min. per week in each subject area have shown great progress, and have the opportunity to be featured in our monthly newsletter. Great news, your students’ lessons will be available from now through the month of July.

Kindergarten and First Grade Paper Pencil Assessments Update

Students who did not complete the spring i-Ready benchmark assessments will be taking the paper pencil assessments in May. The assessments will be administered virtually. Please reach out to your ToR for further details.

CAASPP Update - TESTING WINDOW - 4/12 - 5/14

Thank you for your continued support and patience as we navigate through the remote CAST science assessments. Our students are working hard, and we are so proud of their efforts. Just a friendly reminder that students should have scratch paper and pencils during testing, and should keep the device plugged in to charge the battery.  Students may not have access to phones and Smartwatches during testing, and they cannot access other tabs or the test will be paused. Please ensure that your student eats a well balanced meal and gets plenty of sleep before testing.

ALL English Learners (EL) - Summative ELPAC Assessments

All English Learners have completed the Summative ELPAC assessments. The score reports will be sent to parents as soon as they are sent to EACS by the state. We are so proud of all of the students who took this assessment. Keep working hard!

English Language Development (ELD) Curriculum

Please encourage your students to complete the required English Language Development (ELD) Curriculum daily. If you have any questions about ELD Curriculum or EL Paired Workshops, please contact your ToR or Excel Academy’s Title 1 Coordinator, Tamara Murphy at tmurphy@excelacademy.education. For all testing related questions, you can reach out to your ToR or to Jenny Craig, Assistant Director of Assessment and Community, at jcraig@excelacademy.education.
