I Samuel 16:19 (NIV)

19 "Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, 'Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.'"

David was like many of us; called to do something we feel we are ill-equip to pursue, let alone succeed in doing.

David was a shepherd when Samuel comes to his father Jesse's house and anoints David as the next King of Israel. David's family didn't even think enough of him to call him in from his duties when Samuel asked for all of Jesse's sons. No one but God thought David was good enough to be considered for the position. Yet David was the one that God had chosen to lead His people.

God used one of David's gifts to usher him into the king's palace. Once David is in the palace his training begins. You see David had been out keeping the sheep, fighting bears and lions and hadn't been in the position to learn how to conduct himself in the palace. David had no idea how to be a part of the palace staff, how to be around and deal with royalty and dignitaries. He had to be taught proper protocol, etiquette and everything else that was a part of being a member of the royal staff.

Initially Saul didn't know that David had been chosen by God to replace him as king. God set it up so that David became one of Saul's armor bearers, which meant that Saul helped train David to take over the office of King.

When God is ready to elevate us, to move us further into our Promised Land or position us to fulfill His plan for our lives He has to put us in training. God has to make sure that we are able to not only do the job but succeed while we're in the position.

God gave David King Saul and his Saul's son Jonathan as his teachers and mentors. We need teachers and mentors too if we're going to succeed in what God has for us. Ask God to identify your teachers and mentors for you, then avail yourself to learn.

"Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning." Proverbs 9:9
