Top Housing Tips for Tenants 🏠
We've updated our Housing Law Top Takeaways guide (English / Spanish) to incorporate recent statewide developments in housing law and to reflect deeper insight about common housing issues. A few highlights from our new guide include:
Starting on July 1, 2024, security deposits for a unit typically cannot exceed one month's rent.
Housing providers cannot rely solely on an individual's low credit score to deny an application for subsidized housing. Prospective tenants with low credit scores must be given the opportunity to present proof they are able to pay their portion of the rent, and the housing provider must consider it.
Housing providers cannot threaten to share information about a tenant's immigration status to ICE, law enforcement, or government agencies. Housing laws, including tenants rights, apply to all tenants, regardless of immigration status.
Dive into our guide (English / Spanish) for more concrete takeaways about housing conditions, evictions, reasonable accommodations, and the rights of survivors of domestic violence, among other things!
Feel free to share this guide widely with clients and as always, reach out to us at support@legallink.org with any questions!
