Kazzie Club building now safe and sound.
Welcome to the first KazzieE-Bulletin for 2018. As the main issue of concern over the past few months has been the question of repairs to our building, it is appropriate that members are informed of progress.
A great deal has happened over the holiday period regarding the priority of urgent repairs to our building. Things moved very quickly as the committee endorsed the recommendations of the KAV building sub-committee, which allowed work to go ahead during the quiet period.
The holiday period, especially after Christmas and early new year, due to low traffic volumes, provided an opportunity to proceed, without excessive costs associated with traffic management at other times of the year. As the building is located along a main street frontage with two small streets either side, the cost to engage traffic management people to undertake this at other times would have been a great deal – perhaps in the order of upwards of $5000. Traffic management costs at the time of the works were in fact minimal.
Huge savings were also made because instead of scaffolding the latest Scissor Lift technology was used – namely the Athena Scissor Lift. The original estimate for scaffolding was over $200,000. The hire of the Scissor Lift was $500.
All urgent works have now been completed:
Two extra 100mm copper downpipes were installed at the front of the building to remove excess water from the gutters and in addition 14mm overflow holes were drilled at intervals of approximately two metres in all the guttering to the main building. All gutters were cleaned and are now functional. All at a cost of under $5000 – a far cry from the initial estimates which were in the tens of thousands of dollars. New tapware was also installed in both the male and female rest rooms.
I oversaw the project together with John Anastasiou, and we pitched in with the tradies. Michael Aroney, who was down here from Sydney on holidays, was also hands-on. A huge thank you to John and Michael. Thanks also to John’s son Tom who came along to help out.
Thanks to the committee for approving the work, and of course to all members of the building sub-committee for the concerted effort to get things moving – John Anastasiou (Chair), Thena George, Nick Katris, Michael Spartels, George Stabelos (assistant Chair), and Nick Zorbas. George Stabelos was in Greece but remained in contact throughout.
As graffiti had appeared on the side of the building, the opportunity was also taken to paint the club entrance side of the building in a suitable colour – Monument Grey. Thanks to Michael Spartels and John Athanasiou for supervising the painting job. Unfortunately, the bluestones on the side also have graffiti and an application has been lodged with the Council to remove it.

During our inspection of the building we made an important discovery. The supposedly non-existent fire hydrant was actually inside the front building, hidden inside a cupboard. The cupboard will be removed and the hydrant signposted. A huge expense saved there.
Of course, there will be other repairs and updates over the next four years but the building itself is now safe and sound, thanks to a mighty effort by all concerned.
The building sub-committee will meet on 22nd January to assess various matters, including feedback from the Council on future planning and zoning matters.
The KAV Committee will hold its first meeting for the year on 6th February.

Athena Scissor lift

The Athena strategy worked well for the KAV
The nifty Athena Scissor Lift, new to the market, saved the club a great deal of money when carrying out recent repairs to the club’s building because expensive scaffolding was not needed.
(Athena - Greek Goddess of Wisdom and War. Athena, also referred to as Athene, is a very important goddess of many things. She is goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill.)

The Ithacans have invited Kastellorizians to attend their annual picnic. It is always a great family day. There is ample car parking, and lots of space to lay out your picnic. You can look forward to Children’s amusements, races for children and for adults (medals awarded), tennis, Ice-cream, face-painting, balloonologist and sausage sizzle.
The reserve has barbecue facilities, a large oval, and a hall in case it rains.
Grand afternoon tea will be held in the picnic hall. Bring a plate of your delicious Greek sweets to share. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Kazzie Doctors Make Strides

Kastellorizo is a Greek Dodecanese island well known for its Blue Cave, its picturesque harbour and stunning natural beauty...but what about its doctors?
Three Kazzie doctors found reason to get together recently at a Melbourne educational event organised by the Hellenic Medical Society of Australia (HMSA).
HMSA’s vision is to “Enable doctors to promote better health for all Australians including those of Hellenic descent”, and its mission is to “Unite medical professionals with the community to achieve better health and inspire lifelong advancement in knowledge”. Doctors are encouraged and welcome to join HMSA by logging on to www.hmsa.org.au
Pictured above are our own Dr Nick Lolatgis (left), renowned gynaecologist and fertility specialist, immediate past president of the KAV and past president of the Hellenic Medical Society in Victoria. Nick also made an impressive and well received presentation recently at a Melbourne Health Tourism conference together with medical colleagues from Australia and Greece and personalities such as actor Mary Coustas, regarding advances in management of infertility for which he is a well-known expert. Above right is also our own Dr Michael Conos, a well-known Melbourne doctor and Kew GP, and son of Theo Conos, who also has served as Chair of Inner Eastern Melbourne Division of General Practice in Victoria. Centre is Dr George Stabelos, current HMSA Vice-president and KAV committee member.

The Yorker: journal of the Melbourne Cricket Club Library commenced in 1993 as a current awareness bulletin, listing library news and recent acquisitions.
It has developed into a showcase for research articles, statistical analyses and book reviews targeted at MCC members, sports historians, media and the general public visiting the National Sports Museum.
The latest issue of the Yorker, Summer 2017/2018, features a seven page fully researched article by our own Florence Livery, entitled From a Periscope to a Cricket Pitch in a Matter of Days: The Surreal Nature of War.
The story, complete with photos and other primary material, focuses on Florence’s father, Panos (known as Pino) George Livery and his activities during his years in the Navy in World War II, including a cricket match he purportedly took part in at Lord’s.
The above is a group photo of both the HMAS Shropshire and the Harrods cricket teams. Pino Livery is fourth from right. The Harrods team included a couple of international ring-ins who played under aliases, because despite how important cricket was to the morale of the country, even elite cricketers could not be seen to be enjoying themselves during war time. One of these internationals has been identified as JM Sims the champion Middlesex and English bowler (4th from left).
The article ends with a poignant paragraph from Florence:
“I still shudder to this day when I think about the surreal nature of war and the extremes of experience Ordinary Seamen like Dad encountered. Sport, fun, mateship, the world, fear, life and death.”

Cinema at
the Hellenic Museum
|
Running across February and into March the Hellenic Museum's Summer Cinema program is back for another year. Featuring a stellar line-up of films from the golden age of cinema, this year's movies include Stella, Some Like it Cool, The Blue Beads, O Astrapogiannos and the Trojan Women.
This year's line-up will pay particular tribute to one of Greece's stage and screen greats - Zoe Laskari - who sadly died age 72 in August this year.
Courtyard opens at 6pm. Enjoy food and drinks from Grounds of Arcadia's Greek style Psistaria (wood-fired oven and grill) before and during the movie. Seating is provided and screenings begin at sunset. All films are subtitled.

Green light for a Melbourne "Enterprise Greece' office
The Greek Community of Melbourne and managers of Australia's large investment funds welcomed the announcement by the Economy and Development Minister of Greece, Dimitris Papadimitriou, that Enterprise Greece will open a Melbourne office - its first outside Greece - to pursue investments from Australia.

The KAV Building – a rocky start with the Boys’ Club
The present clubrooms were purchased at auction on 6 December 1967 for $27,500. The first tenant for Emerald Hill Theatre, as it was then known, was the Adult Education Council who leased the building for the Melbourne Boys’ Club. In the 1968 re-leasing agreement the building was to be made available to the Castellorizian Brotherhood and the Castellorizian Ladies Society twelve week-ends per year, on the last week-end in every month. Unfortunately, it appears that all did not go according to plan, as evidenced by the following letter in our Archives (click image to view it in greater resolution):

Further explanatory notes:
- At the time of purchase the Castellorizian Brotherhood and the Castellorizian Ladies Society were separate entities and did not amalgamate until 1978.
- The building was in the name of six trustees. The original trustees, representing the Brotherhood, were Nick Adgemis, Mick Kyriakos and Con Zombos and representing the Ladies, were Maria T Adgemis, Maria Kominos and Margaret Moraitis. Guarantors were Leffy and John Mangos.
- The building was managed by the trustees. Margaret Moraitis was appointed as secretary.
- After this letter arrangements between the Boys’ Club and the Association were amicably sorted out.
- The next tenant for the main building, trading as the Persian Carpet Warehouse, has been in operation there for about 40 years. Arrangements are amicable.
