...IN THIS OCTOBER 2016 NEWSLETTER...

A note to new Toastmasters... Welcome to the new and returning Toastmasters who have joined or rejoined a Toastmasters club in District 90 recently. "Ninety News" is a newsletter of District activities and important Toastmasters matters sent regularly to members.

From the District Director
Semi Annual now only weeks away

Welcome to the pre-Semi Annual Conference Newsletter. Today, Friday 21st October, is the earlybird registration deadline. If you are attending the entire Conference at Gosford RSL on the 4-6 Nov, you should register today.

We do hope to see many of you at the Conference. We have three exciting presenters, Mark D’Silva, Joseph Boutros and Anna Perdriau. Plus our newly elected International Director, David Fisher will be giving a keynote.

The final of the Humorous and Table Topic Contests are worth the price of admission on their own. Our Semi Annual Conference Chairman Tanya Wickham and her team are working overtime to make this a weekend of great Toastmastering with friends.

And remember, every District 90 Toastmaster can attend the District Council Meeting at 8.30am on Saturday morning 5th Nov, for free. Please make sure that you have your club’s proxies, should your President of Vice President Education not be there.

Now that you all have settled into your year, your first round of contests are over, we can all focus on the running of your clubs. There is a strong view that each Toastmaster club should conduct four PR promotions a year. If you are unsure what you can do at your club, contact our Public Relations manager, Udo Moerig, who will fill you with ideas. And even if you are not on your club’s executive, you can put your hand up to assist.

Look forward to seeing you all at the Semi Annual Conference at Gosford RSL in two weeks’ time.

Vale – Denis & Krista Greenwood

District 90 (and District 70 before us) lost two of our strongest members – Denis and Krista Greenwood – within the space of a month recently.

As a husband and wife team, they were a strength in their current Eastern Division (geographic) areas but both had a long history of leadership involvement in Toastmasters.

Both served as Northern Division Governors in the days when Northern Division covered the Hunter and Central Coast as well as northern NSW and both also served as Eastern Division Governors soon after Northern was split into the two Divisions.

Both put a lot of time and effort into their leadership roles, travelling huge distances to support the work and growth of Toastmasters. When Denis was Northern Division Governor, he travelled to Narrabri on a number of occasions to support the establishment of the Narrabri Toastmasters club which chartered in 1989.

Both Denis and Krista were instrumental in the establishment of Dynamic Dora Creek in 1986.

Denis served as Area 23 Governor in 1987/88 before becoming Northern Division Governor in 1988/89.

Krista followed Denis as Northern Division Governor in 1989/90.

As well as their involvement in Toastmasters, both had an involvement in the Lions organisation.

Denis, in particular, played an important role in the establishment and on-going workings of the Driver Reviver operation

Denis was 76 when he died on June 28. Krista was 74 when she died on July 29. Both had been suffering serious illnesses prior to their passing.

They are survived by children and partners Vinay and Angela, Naleen, Vaneeta and Bruce and grand children Lachlan and Jack.

Vale – Norman Priestley

Distinguished Toastmaster Norman Priestley was a standout member of Toastmasters in Australia… a leader, a champion speaker and an all-round “good bloke”.

In June, District 90 presented a Lifetime Achievement plaque for Norman. It read, in part, “for his adherence to Toastmasters values and mission”.

Then District Director Bob Kirchner said Norman made a powerful contribution to Toastmasters, in Sydney, on the mid north coast and in the broader Districts 70 and 90.

Fellow club member and friend, former Oxley Division Director and District Public Relations Manager Justyn Phillips said, “I would like to reword the plaque Norman received, to say ‘he is the embodiment of Toastmasters Mission and Values’.

“I see Norman as always a gentleman (integrity), always constructive (respect), an Area Director and club coach for Taree, plus being a mentor to many fellow members (service), and representing Toastmasters in NSW three times on the international stage of the World Championship of Public Speaking, 1996, 1997 and 2000 (excellence).

“I think I fully realised Norman’s passion, preparation, and presentation while watching him work with Taree club as club coach. Every meeting he presented a different education session to improve the quality of the club.”

Then Taree President and current Area 5 Director Colin Steber said: “Norman was my first point of contact when I came to my first Toastmasters meeting. He made me feel extremely welcome and provided encouragement. Norman mentored me for my Icebreaker and also my number 10 CC speech: he was there for both and was full of praise. I owe a lot of my skills and knowledge to Norman. I always took great value from his education sessions which he did regularly and brilliantly.

Fellow member Simon Brown said: “Norman set the standard for Taree Toastmasters and passionately educated us as to how Toastmasters should be.  For me, he was the person I first spoke to about Toastmasters when I was looking at joining. He provided that all-important initial encouragement to come back after the first meeting which is the biggest challenge for any guest. I’m pretty sure we were his favourite Toastmasters Club – or maybe just his biggest challenge!”

Fellow club member Philip Thornton said: Norman Priestley could have been the winner of the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking! He was so close, and to have a member of that calibre in our club every meeting was like having a Formula 1 driver teaching us to drive. Norman's ability to make sentences come alive was breathtaking, his speeches were always memorable, and his evaluations could have been from a bestselling text book – perfect. He was so good at telling stories that I would have paid just for the entertainment. How we miss him!”

Fellow club member Leo Bushell said: “It’s a great pleasure and honour to acknowledge Norman – the guru of public speaking. But he was a great mentor in the same moment, who would support, motivate and encourage all club members. He was a great role model and old-fashioned toastmaster. He set the bar high.

“Norman helped with the starting of Hastings Morning Talkers,” Justyn said, “the second club in Port Macquarie. He, along with just a few other experienced Toastmasters, ensured that each new member got as good an evaluation for their first speech as possible. This set the tone and standard for all evaluations in the club.

“I will miss you, Norman.”
