Washington, D.C. – Student Veterans of America (SVA) announced today that Executive Vice President James Schmeling has been selected to become the CEO of the National Defense University Foundation (NDUF) after nearly four years of service to SVA.
Schmeling joined the SVA team in December, 2015 and has been responsible for development and strategic partnerships, including collaborations with business and industry partners, employer coalitions, veterans service organizations, colleges and universities, higher education associations, foundations, and others.
He developed the Business and Industry Roundtable as a way to engage SVA Chapters with companies focused on student veterans as part of their corporate citizenship and talent acquisition strategies.
"James Schmeling has held an integral role in advancing SVA's development and partnership strategies since 2015," SVA National President and CEO Jared Lyon said. "While we will miss him, we know he will thrive in this new position while continuing to serve our nation's national security."
Prior to joining SVA, Schmeling co-founded the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, and was appointed as its first managing director. He has co-founded two, and built three, highly successful publicly-engaged research institutes in public and private universities.
“It’s been my great privilege to work with Jared Lyon, Dr. Chris Cate, and all of our team to share the incredible potential student veterans bring to higher education, to their communities, and to their employers,” Schmeling said. “I’ll miss SVA, and I’m proud to leave it as the most impactful organization serving veterans in our country.”
Schmeling is a U.S. Air Force veteran, served 6+ years, and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Post-service he earned his law degree, with distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law, and his B.A. in political science with a minor in international studies (Latin America) from Iowa State University. He has led and served on several non-profit boards, including currently serving on the board of directors of Corporate America Supports You and the Military Spouse Corporate Career Network.
The SVA National Headquarters team congratulates James and looks forward to following his accomplishments at NDUF, as he continues to champion America's student veterans, military families, military leaders, and others.
