This spring, seeing flowers bloom after a long, cold winter, we're thinking about new beginnings. The free legal assistance provided by the Justice Center gives many of our clients a vital new start, whether it's through aid filing for bankruptcy, moving from homelessness into permanent housing, or, as we'll tell in a story in this newsletter, getting asylum in the United States after fleeing horrific violence.

In all of the Justice Center's cases, gaining access to civil justice - in other words, to a lawyer – is life-changing. For the low-income, marginalized New Yorkers we serve, it's the difference between staying in your home or being on the street, getting food or going hungry, having your children or being separated from them, and being able to earn a livelihood or being unemployed.

That's why your contributions, whether through pro bono service or donations, matter. They stop thousands of New Yorkers from falling through the cracks of the civil justice system, each year.

Financial Institution Pro Bono Day
Yesterday, May 2, was Financial Institution Pro Bono Day, when we celebrate attorneys at our partner financial institutions who change the lives of countless New Yorkers each year through their commitment to expanding access to civil justice. Yesterday, six of those institutions – American Express, Barclays, BNY Mellon, Capital One, and JP Morgan Chase – along with law firm Sullivan & Cromwell, hosted and staffed legal clinics for our Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project and Legal Clinic for the Homeless. We salute our colleagues whose hard work and commitment to public service help their fellow New Yorkers overcome legal barriers to living better lives.
