First Annual Gary Pecquet Fly-in & Fly Market

Saturday, December 1, was the day for the First Annual Gary Pecquet Fly-in and Santa’s Fly Market at the Port of South Louisiana Executive Regional Airport.  Gary was a long time tenant, mechanic and a member of the Hangar 39 Crew that held several free parties every year at the airport, one of which was occasionally a “Fly Market”.  This first annual event arose out of the Port’s desire to honor Gary so they decided to name this event after him. They anticipate it to grow each year.

As you can see from the photos, parts were available for sale and gumbo was served.  To see more photos courtesy of the airport click HERE

Help Grow Our Readership
Asking Louisiana Flight Schools for Help in This Edition

This email went out to 1,201 subscribers which is nice…..but with the size of the Louisiana aviation community the number of readers should be many times that.

I’m continuing to challenge various segments of readers to help increase the distribution.   Last edition it was the FAA Facilities in Louisiana. Today, I’m going to continue by asking all of the Louisiana Flight Schools for their assistance.

Here are a few things I would like the Flight Schools to do to help increase the distribution:

  1. Forward this Louisiana Aviation News email to your instructors, maintenance personnel, office staff, students and rental customers so they can subscribe.

  2. Routinely put something in your newsletters or fliers about how to subscribe to the Louisiana Aviation News.

  3. Print a poster and put it on your bulletin boards.  You can get the poster by clicking HERE

To Subscribe to the Louisiana Aviation News click HERE and follow the instructions.  Or you can also scan this with your cell phone…

Stay tuned as I will pick another segment of the Louisiana aviation community in the next edition.  Thanks for your help.

Title: Mastering Aerial Survey Flight Ops
Topic: Best Practices in the Safe Operation of Aircraft at Lower Altitudes and Airspeeds
Date and Time: Saturday, December 8, 2018, starting at 09:00 Central Standard Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s): Emmet Bartholomew, Richie Blink
Brief Description:
From the beginning of flight training, pilots are taught that altitude is their friend. There are many operations, however, that dictate aircraft be flown at lower altitudes and lower airspeeds. This type of flying is not limited to crop dusters, mosquito control or pipeline inspection pilots but to any who have a need to utilize aircraft for photography / filmography, aerial survey or mere sightseeing.
Operating aircraft “low and slow” during aerial survey flights pose numerous threats not otherwise encountered. Concerns of terrain, obstacle clearance, passenger distractions, maintaining situation awareness, airspace restrictions, remaining clear of clouds, helicopter traffic and birds are just a few of the specialized risks associated with this type of operation.
Acquiring the aviation knowledge, skill and experience to manage these unique operational risks are specialized. This presentation will provide an overview of the challenges pilots face when conducting flight operations in this type of hazardous environment and will address best practices and techniques to significantly lower these specific types of risks.
Refreshments and light lunch provided.
Select Number: SW0388144
Location of Seminar:
New Orleans Lakefront Airport
6001 Stars and Stripes Boulevard
Airport Terminal Building
New Orleans, LA 70126
Directions to Venue:
If driving, the airport may be accessed from Interstate-10 by either the Morrison Blvd exit or the Downman Rd exit. From the Morrison Rd. exit, drive approximately 1 mile to the intersection of Downman Rd and turn right. From the Downman Rd exit, remain straight. At the very end of Downman Rd, pass beneath the train bridge and turn to the right. The first left turn will be the airport terminal building's U shaped parking lot and the main front entrance.
If flying, there are two FBO's on the field. Both offer full service to aircraft and access to the terminal building.
The meeting will be held in the main 2nd floor conference room, West side wing of building that is to the left when entering through the main front entrance way. There are two sets of stairs on either side of the main lobby and an elevator on the East side of the lobby that is to the right when entering through the main front entrance.

Aeronautical Oddities

I remember someone in the New Orleans EAA Chapter had an 16mm copy of this film in the late seventies and we used to occasionally watch it at meetings….. and  of course laughed out loud (now we would say LOL)
