EAA Chapter 261 Young Eagles Event
The rain-date Young Eagles event last Saturday was another premier success! Though the Boy Scouts couldn’t make it, 18 youngsters, including NOLA Homeschooling Heroes and others, revelled in the aerial city tour (most flying for the very first time). They also inspected the highly competent workings of the Lakefront Control Tower, and dined on scrumptious hamburgers and hotdogs and cookies – oh my! A hearty thank you to pilots, Tim Walsh, and Steve Schwarz, expert commanders of their aircraft and flights; grill master, C.J. Gallo; Toby Burroughs, COO, who brought the whole thing together; and Don Ortego, who dutifully shepherded the students to and from the control tower with nary a knee scrape.
Also, special appreciation to the dedicated professionals at the Lakefront Control Tower, and the unique accommodations by the Airport Operations personnel. All went smoothly, without a glitch.
Our next Young Eagles event will be spring of 2019. Will be sure to let you know - hope to see you then.

LA Tech Planes Benefiting Minden
Louisiana Tech University’s airplanes used for instruction in the school’s aviation department are currently being housed at Minden’s airport. The Ruston airport is closed for approximately 20 days for improvements. Students are receiving lessons in Minden.
“They buy fuel here and we receive tie-down fees so it’s creating revenue,” airport manager Steven Burdeaux said.
Minden’s airport also recently received improvements with solar powered taxiway reflectors through a $40,000 grant from the Louisiana Department of Transportation Aviation Division. This improvement provides extra guidance to pilots at night.

Help Grow Our Readership
Asking Louisiana FBO's for Help in This Edition
The distribution list for the Louisiana Aviation News continues to grow very slowly. We gain 1-3 or so subscribers a week which is disappointing. This email went out to 1,196 subscribers which is nice…..but with the size of the Louisiana aviation community it should be many times that.
Why am I even concerned about the size of the distribution list? It’s true that LaAviator.com is not a business and I don’t charge for anything. I won’t get any direct benefit from increasing the size of the list. The main reason is that doing all of this takes a lot of work…. and therefore, the more people that read it then the more people that will benefit from my work.
While the goal of LaAviator.com has always been to benefit the entire Louisiana Aviation Community, over the next few weeks I’m going to challenge various segments of readers to help increase the distribution. Last edition it was the military aviation units in Louisiana. Today, I’m going to continue with all of the FBO’s in Louisiana.
Here are a few things I would like the FBO’s to do to help increase the distribution:
- Forward this Louisiana Aviation News email to your customers and employees so they can subscribe.
- Routinely put something in your newsletters or fliers about how to subscribe to the Louisiana Aviation News.
- Print a poster and put it on your bulletin boards. You can get the poster by clicking HERE
To Subscribe to the Louisiana Aviation News click HERE and follow the instructions. Or you can also scan this with your cell phone…
Stay tuned as I will pick another segment of the Louisiana aviation community in the next edition. Thanks for your help.
