Dunkley Parliamentary Wrap

Welcome to the latest edition of the Dunkley Parliamentary Wrap.

This week the Government passed a number of important pieces of legislation, as we got to work on delivering a better future for all Australians.

In this email you will find:

This week in Parliament

Each week on Facebook I upload a video summary of the week.

This week I gave the Dunkley Parliamentary Wrap in the Parliament.

Aged Care Reforms

We made a promise to Australians that we would take better care of their loved ones and restore dignity to our most vulnerable citizens.

This week, the Albanese Government delivered on this promise.

The first piece of legislation to pass through the parliament implemented recommendations from the Aged Care Royal Commission that were not adopted in the previous parliament.

The reforms in this legislation are the first step in restoring dignity and integrity in Australia’s aged care system.

Climate Change

On Thursday, the Government took the first real action on climate change in over a decade when legislation setting our emissions reduction target of 43% by 2030 was passed by the House of Representatives.

This is a significant moment in Australia’s history and marks the beginning of the Albanese Government’s delivery on strong climate action.

I spoke on ABC Afternoon Briefing about how renewable energy is the cheapest form of new energy, and is good for jobs, the economy and the planet.

Jack from Frankston

This week was National Homelessness Week, which serves as an important reminder of the serious issue of homelessness in our community.

On Monday, I shared the story of Jack, a young man from Frankston who was just 18 when a family breakdown left him homeless.

I told his story to bring attention to the fact we do not have enough crisis accommodation here in Dunkley.

Sadly Jack's story isn't unique, but this week I reaffirmed my commitment to working with all levels of government to provide emergency accommodation for young people in the Frankston area.

Uluru Statement from the Heart

This week I spoke on the importance of enshrining an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart is a generous offer by First Nations People to walk with them in a movement of the Australian people for a better future.

It is an invitation that all of us in parliament, in both chambers, must accept.

Wellbeing Budget

A wellbeing budget is something I talk about a lot. Because it's important.

It shows a more complete picture of our nation. Going beyond GDP figures to tell a bigger story about collective wellbeing.

That's why I am so pleased that Treasurer Chalmers has announced that his first budget, coming up in October, will include a new wellbeing statement.

I also gave speeches in the parliament about aged care reforms, human rights and the jobs and economic benefits of developing the Australian renewable energy industry. You can find all my speeches on my YouTube channel

Of course, this is just a quick snapshot of the week. A lot more happened behind the scenes.
