Dunkley Parliamentary Wrap

Welcome to the second Dunkley Parliamentary Wrap of 2022.

I want to keep you updated on my work as your voice and representative in Canberra and some opportunities around our community to drop by for a chat with me this weekend.

In this email you will find:

Second Week of Parliament for 2022

This week of Parliament was the last sitting before a six week break. I tried to make the most of the four days to raise issues that are important to our community.

You can hear about the week in parliament below:

Hands on Learning

On Monday, I moved a private members motion asking the parliament to confirm that education is a basic human right and to work to ensure everyone has access to an education that allows them to reach their potential.

In doing so, I called on the Federal Government to fund the expansion of Hands on Learning. A transformative education program that started at Frankston High School 22 years ago.

It’s now in 100 schools across the country, helping disengaged students stay in education and training.

Aged Care Crisis

"Tears well in my eyes as I write this email, I'm feeling absolutely hopeless".

These are the words of a local aged care worker who wrote to me about the current crisis. This week I raised her voice in the Parliament.

Because everyone who works and lives in aged care deserves better.

Delacombe Park Cricket Club

Last weekend, I was privileged to join Delacombe Park Cricket Club for the opening of their Women's Wall.

I was proud to tell the Parliament how Bill Mallinson, Ash Hudson and Miranda Maling with the support of members are making changes to ensure their club is not only supportive and inclusive but that the contributions of women and girls are equally recognised and valued within their clubrooms.

Set the Standard

This week, new laws passed in the House of Representatives to improve protections for parliamentary staff.

While it's a step in the right direction, words and laws on their own don’t lead to changes in culture.

Actions change the culture. Demonstrated and lived attitudes change the culture. And as elected representatives we must set the standard.

Langwarrin Community Centre

On Wednesday, I spoke about the incredibly stressful situation the Langwarrin Community Centre has been put in by the government.

The Langwarrin Community Centre has been left out of pocket because of a mistake the government made with the childcare subsidy. The government now expects the Centre to act as a debt collector to fix the error.

It's outrageous. I'll keep advocating for the government to fix this.

I raised a number of other issues this week from local carparks to the need for a national anti-corruption commission. In recognition of the 14th anniversary of PM Kevin Rudd's apology to the Stolen Generations, I also reconfirmed our community's commitment to the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

All of these speeches are available on my YouTube Channel.
