During the summer, children in Japan enjoy hunting for Japanese rhinoceros beetles. Our children are no exception.

September 2020 Update

Thank you for all your prayers for us and our ministry in Japan. At the end of this month, we will have been here for 3 years. God has sustained us through the thick darkness. He has been with us all along. And at times though we couldn't see any light, God was there with us. The darkness and light are the same to him. He's been protecting us and guiding us to this point. Please continue to pray for us as we transition to planting Gospel-centered churches in the near future.

Right now, the biggest news here in Japan isn't COVID-19, it's the fact that our prime minister announced he's stepping down a few days ago due to health issues. Everyone is wondering who will take the place of prime minister Abe. Please pray for Japan as I believe they will be holding an election for who will be the new prime minister.

It has become so hot outside lately we started having both Taishi and Emi's friends play at our house more regularly. Nozomi has been doing some crafts with Emi's friends. They really enjoy coming over and playing. Taishi's friends prefer to play games or trade Pokemon cards with him. Please pray we can use this opportunity to share the good news (Gospel) of hope with these children and with their parents.

Continue to pray for us as we reach out to our neighbors. Nozomi had a good conversation with Mrs. Yamada downstairs, the other day. Nozomi brought a small gift and Mrs. Yamada was very kind to Nozomi. Please pray that we can reach her and her husband with the Gospel.

I've been keeping conversations with one of my neighbors who is a Canadian. Last time we went out for lunch we talked a little about home exercise. Since then, he's been messaging me about some equipment he's found on Amazon. Pray these conversations can open up doors for me sharing the Gospel with him. His name is Kyle.

We continue local gatherings in Oyumino for Alive International Church services. We still have limited the number of people allowed in the building because of concerns about spreading COVID-19. Although it's awkward, we've been asking members to choose to come every-other-week and to stream on Zoom for the weeks they do not attend. We have been so blessed in worshipping our Lord with our brothers and sisters together in person.

This past Sunday I was able to preach in Japanese twice at a church in Toke. Both preaching times were filled with God's grace, both for me as the preacher and for those listening. This month I am preaching in English with a translator again at Alive International. Thank you for praying for my preaching opportunities!

Pray as I have been asked to share my testimony in Japanese for the Japanese men's small group on Zoom. Since our Japanese men's small group took a summer break for the month of August, I'll be giving my testimony in Japanese sometime this month. Please pray for clarity in the Gospel as I share what God has done in my life through his Spirit, his Word, and his people.

I am still continuing my Japanese lessons on Zoom for now. Having classes on Zoom has been saving a lot of money every month on commuting costs. It also saves about two hours of commute time every day.

Keep praying for our kids. Pray Nozomi and I can graciously and consistently use opportunities to be instruments in the hands of our Redeemer to our children. God has graciously placed them in a household of faith. May He bless them with spiritual life through faith in the Gospel.

Keep praying for Kensei's eyes. Please pray that through daily practice he can learn to keep his eyes straight on his own.

Continue to pray for church-planting partners as well. Our church-planting intensive training in downtown Tokyo has been rescheduled for October 11-23. Please pray all will go smoothly this time. We look forward to the opportunity to expand our network and meet potential church-planting partners. I have already begun meeting with a church-planting mentor.

God is answering your prayers for Gospel-centered Christian friends and fellowship. He has been slowly providing these friends, though they all might be multi-denominational. In a country where only 0.3% of the population are professing evangelical Christians, it seems inevitable that some of our Christian friends are from other denominations. It glorifies God as we all work together for the glory of our King here in Japan.

Please keep in touch! You and your love and care for us are a great blessing to us. We are so honored to be working together with you to take the Gospel to the millions of lost in Japan. If you have any questions about what we are doing in Japan, or about partnering with us financially please do not hesitate to email me by replying to this email. I look forward to communicating with you.

While at the post office with the smaller children, Nozomi and I noticed the children's books in the waiting area were Christian books! It was a big encouragement.
It was such a blessing to be able to visit Kisarazu for a few days of family time. One of the days we drove to Umi Hotaru (the middle of a man-made bridge-tunnel across Tokyo Bay), and got there just in time to watch the sunset.
