School holds Springboard event
Debden Park Sixth Form again opened its doors to welcome its Class of 2021 - the latest set of applicants hoping to study A-Levels at the school in September.
Having finished their final GCSE exams, more than 100 Year 11 students from a number of secondary schools across the region visited Debden Park for their final taste of Sixth Form life before enrolling in the summer.
Following the massive success of pre-application open days and taster lessons for prospective students, the Springboard event marked ‘Day 1’ of their A-Level life, beginning summer projects on their chosen subjects as well as offering a chance to showcase the full range of enrichment opportunities on offer to new students.
As well as tackling a range of A-Level topics - from examining the geological structure of rocks using a variety of chocolate bars to reenacting the 1938 Munich Agreement - the Year 11s had the chance to sign up to one of the many enrichment activities available from September, including signing up to training as a Year 11 mentor, taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme or completing a university dissertation-style Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
As part of their preparation for the demands of independent study, research sessions also gave students the chance to find an article or resource on topic of their choice and present their findings to the rest of the year.
Director of Sixth Form Joe Simm said: "Sixth Formers at Debden Park play such an important part in the school and the Springboard day was a perfect way to get the Year 11s thinking about all the ways they can step up to play leading roles across the community."
One particularly exciting opportunity was the chance for students to fundraise to take part in a life-changing trip to undertake community outreach and work in a turtle sanctuary in Malaysia in summer 2020 as part of World Challenge.
In previous years, groups of students have travelled as far as Sri Lanka and Swaziland (where a group are currently working as part of this year’s expedition).
Mr Simm added: “We are so excited about what’s in store for the Class of 2021. Springboard was such a massive success and can’t wait to welcome them back and get started in September."
