Local Plan designation victory for parish council
Buckhurst Hill parish and district councillors Aniket Patel, Sylvia Watson and Neville Wright have successfully overturned an Epping Forest District Council proposal to designate the Parish as a 'Town' in the draft Local Plan, insisting that Buckhurst Hill is, instead, a 'Large Village'.
Councillor Patel said: “Had we not argued the parish council's case at the September district council cabinet meeting an irreversible decision to designate Buckhurst Hill as a town would have been made that night.”
Councillor Watson added: "We strongly objected to the status of 'Town' rather than 'Large Village' because it would have led to a greater amount of the surrounding green belt land being considered for potential development under the Local Plan.”
Councillor Wright said: “The change in designation in the Local Plan document halves the distance the district council will go into Green Belt looking for land for potential development.”
At the cabinet meeting, cabinet member Richard Bassett acknowledged the objections and committed to review the position of Buckhurst Hill.
He has since written to the parish council and the revised report for adoption by the cabinet now classifies Buckhurst Hill as a ‘Large Village’.
