Epping Town player nominated for Essex County FA
'Fair Play' award
An Epping Town footballer has been nominated for an Essex County FA 'Fair Play' award after he turned down the chance of an 'open goal' after the opposition's goalkeeper was injured.
Midfielder Daniel Garfinkle could have scored against Writtle in the First Round of the Essex Junior Cup on Saturday but instead kicked the ball away with the Writtle 'keeper lying on the ground with a knee injury.
Epping Town manager Billy Cove said: "Scoring a goal when the 'keeper is laying on the ground injured isn’t our style.
"Daniel showed amazing sportsmanship to do what he did. He stopped the ball, turned around and kicked the ball out for a throw-in so the 'keeper could get some treatment."
The Epping physio Sarah Hulme also received praise after she dashed onto the pitch to treat the injured player.
Epping Town were 3-0 up at the time, and went on to win the tie 4-0.
