Twelve Year 7 and 8 students at King Harold Academy took over the Epping Forest District Museum in Waltham Abbey for a day.
It was the second successive year that the school has worked with the museum, in Sun Street.
The students met Epping Forest District Council chairman David Stallan and showed off their excellent historical knowledge while also teaching Leverton Primary school children about the exhibitions.
Museum Take-over Day is a nationally-run experience supported by the Arts Council.
The King Harold students put together an exhibition, arranged activities and provided a treasure hunt for visitors on the day.
They also had to design publicity material, and chose the theme of toys and games in the past.
