Epping Town player to receive FA 'Fair Play' award
Epping Town footballer Daniel Garfinkle has described his Essex County FA 'Fair Play' award as a "massive honour".
He was nominated by manager Billy Cove after he turned down the chance of an open goal in a cup match at Writtle to allow the home team's injured goalkeeper to receive treatment.
He said: " It's a massive honour to win this award and it's fantastic recognition for the club.
"I wasn't expecting anything like this to happen when the incident occurred so all this is a bit of a surprise. I really appreciate all the people who voted for me.
"As for the incident, I remember our striker Tim (Curtis) clashing with the Writtle 'keeper and the 'keeper going down injured.
"It looked serious so I put the ball out of play so that he could get treatment. Thankfully it wasn't as bad as it looked and it turned out to be nothing serious."
Epping Town manager Billy Cove said: "I'm really pleased for 'Garf'. It was a very good thing that he did and you don’t see it enough these days.
"Thankfully the 'keeper was okay and we went on to win the game pretty comfortably.
"It’s more recognition for the club, so we’re very thankful to all the people that voted."
Daniel, who will receive a voucher from the Essex County FA, received 66 per cent of the votes cast in the online Facebook poll.
