Town council consulting over whether to fund all-night street lighting or additional policing
A public consultation exercise is being undertaken by Waltham Abbey Town Council before a decision is taken over whether to pay for all-night street lighting in the town or to fund additional police cover.

Essex County Council has given town and parish councils in the district the option of paying for the county council's street lights to be left on between 1am and 5am.

This would cost Waltham Abbey Town Council £27,236.75.

In a survey for residents, the town council is asking whether the town's residents would be happy to pay an additional £5.20 a year to keep the lights on all night or whether they would prefer the money went towards increased police cover.

The consultation runs until Friday, April 26.

Town clerk Kathryn Richmond said: "The concerns of residents over all-night lighting along with police cover have been raised by residents in various parts of the district.

"Waltham Abbey Town Council, along with other councils across the district, are conducting a survey, consulting residents as to whether or not either of these options should be paid for through the town council precept.

"There is sufficient in the town council’s 2019-20 budget for one of these options only.

"No doubt some will feel either one of these initiatives will be of benefit to the community, with others thinking that the current lit hours or amount of police cover is sufficient. The important thing is that residents of Waltham Abbey can choose what is best for the area."

The consultation form is available on the town council's website with a hard copy going out with the April edition of the council's Town Crier magazine.

Completed hard copy forms should be returned to the town council offices, Waltham Abbey Town Hall, Highbridge Street, Waltham Abbey.
