The progress made in the first year year of the 'Great Waltham Abbey Tapestry' project has been praised by Waltham Abbey Town Council.
An update on the work was given at a 'One Year On' meeting held by the town council at Town Mead.
Essex County Council vice-chairman Cllr John Jowers and Waltham Abbey Town Mayor Cllr Mick Fitch were among those who attended the meeting to hear about the project which has received funding from Essex County Council’s Community Initiatives Fund.
Both Cllr Jowers and Cllr Fitch were invited to put in a few stitches and to sign the stitchers' book.
The cross-stitch tapestry consists of nine panels which illustrate the heritage of Waltham Abbey, from the miracle of the Holy Cross to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Tricia Gurnett gave a presentation on the history presented by the panels while the meeting also heard from Anthea Godfrey, of the Embroiderers’ Guild, who spoke about her projects and how she can assist with the work.
Linda Jewson and Gwen Hall answered technical questions.
A number of the images within the panels have now been completed and were on show at the meeting.
Town Clerk Kathryn Richmond said: “The town council is delighted with the response from local stitchers, and the quality of the work is stunning.
"We are thrilled with the progress we have made so far but if there are any stitchers who would like to contribute, please ring the Town Hall on 01992 714949 for a chat.”
