AUGUST Newsletter
 
We hope that everyone had a great summer and that the year ahead will be a positive and 'energetic' one for all. There's lots going on already so it's a jam packed first newsletter of the school year!

European Week of Sport takes place September 10-18 and we encourage all schools to join in with the #BeActive school campaign. It's very early in the school year but there are lots of easy ways that schools can join in.

CONGRATULATIONS - This week we received the GREAT news that 2 Irish schools have been chosen by the European Commission as finalists for the #BeActive Education Award. This is a fantastic achievement.


Some other news - The home page of the ASF website has a new look and revisions have been made to the online application form for 2016/2017.

#BeActive EDUCATION' Award - FINALISTS
Two out of the three finalists for the #BeActive Education Award are Irish schools! We congratulate St Clare's NS, Harold's Cross, Dublin 6W and St Clare's NS, Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan on this fantastic achievement. School representatives will travel to Brussels for the final on September 15th. Fingers crossed an Irish school brings home the top prize!!

#BeActive SCHOOLS Campaign for European Week of Sport (September 10-18)
ASF, Sport Ireland and Ireland Active encourage ALL schools to organise fun and inclusive physical activity opportunities during European Week of Sport. All schools will receive a #BeActive leaflet and poster by post in late August. Schools that REGISTER their events on the Irish Sports Council's website will also be posted out a schools' resource pack.

Here are some ways that school can participate in the #BeActive Schools' Campaign: 

MOVE IT Monday
All schools are asked to DROP EVERYTHING and MOVE (in whatever you like) from 12 - 12.10pm The best two photos/videos will win a €150 voucher for sports equipment. Find out more


TRY IT Tuesday 
Contact your Local Sports Partnership, leisure centre or sports clubs to introduce students to the many physical activity opportunities that exist in their local community

WALK IT Wednesday
Build walking into the school day. You might even create a 'pop up' walking  route for the day/week.

TEAMWORK Thursday 
Set a target that everyone works together to achieve during #BeActive week. This could be completing a marathon, climbing the highest mountains of Europe or challenging other classes in FUN events.

Friday TAKE on the TEACHERS 
Friday is National Fitness Day (NFD). Join the 'Take on the Teachers' challenge to see who is the fittest, the fastest, the strongest.....not to mention the most competitive! REGISTER your school, your challenge and the result on www.nationalfitnessday.ie  to see if the teachers or the students will win the 2016 Challenge. The best two photos/videos will each win a €150 voucher for sports equipment. Find out more

Fit4Class - Primary Schools Athletics Programme

it4Class is Athletics Ireland’s new 10 week programme that introduces primary school children from junior infants to fourth class to athletics in a fun, engaging and non-competitive environment. Read the Fit4Class programme outline here - Programme Outline - Fit4Class . Fit4Class was successfully piloted in 6 schools before the summer break -  Fit4class passes the test .

Athletics Ireland is now inviting 300 DEIS primary school classes nationwide to register and take part in Fit4Class. Registration is free and now open. Teachers can register their class here  - Register - Fit4Class. Schools TRIATHLON Programme - Primary/Post Primary Schools 
In September 2016, Triathlon Ireland will be introducing a nationwide schools triathlon programme called Tri Heroes. The programme is designed to help schools and teachers introduce triathlon activities to students whilst supporting the needs of the school to deliver the necessary Physical Education progression for all pupils. Triathlon Ireland is currently looking for expressions of interest from schools, teachers or clubs who would be like to be part of the first roll out of this national programme.

Action for Life TRAINING Opportunities (Irish Heart Foundation)
Action for Life is health related physical activity programme designed to support teachers with the roll out of their PE programme. Teacher Training is provided by the Irish Heart Foundation to support teachers in the delivery of Action for Life. More Information

Well done to all the schools who took part in the Get Ireland Walking Schools' Walking Challenge as part of Active School Week. Congratulations to Scoil Aodán Naofa, Carnew, Co. Wicklow and Ballygiblin NS, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork.

ASF Application Process

ASF Application Form - CHANGES
The ASF online application form for primary schools has been revised in light of feedback received last year. The new form is undergoing testing at the moment , therefore we have suspended the Register and Log In functions for a few days. The registration function and access to the online application forms will return next week. 
  • New applicants and renewal schools should download and work from the 2016/2017 application form.
  • Schools that commenced the process on the 2015/2016 form last year but have not yet submitted their application or that received a Request for Further Information/Development will have the option to continue working from the older version of the online form. 

RENEWAL Notification 
Schools that achieved their flag during 2013/2014, or earlier, are invited to re-apply during 2016/2017 in order to maintain their ASF status. 

ASF Autumn Presentations
ASF presentations will take place nationwide during September and October. This year we hope to invite local ASF schools to share their experience of the process with others during the second part of the presentation.


Attendance is recommended for both NEW applicants and RENEWAL schools and early booking is advised
