NEW WORK: "WHEN IT DAWNS ON YOU" (it's wonderful)
Apologies for the poor photo - not had this pro photographed yet as I finished it only today. It's hard to do this one justice on an iPhone camera.
Edition of 2. Neon on acrylic, aluminium, print and in deep aluminium frame with UK transformer.
This is the darkest piece I have done. The bright "it's wonderful" and beautiful colourful earth are designed to initially make this appear like a happy, uplifting work of light art...but that's not my style...so if you delve a little deeper and closer to the piece, at what's lurking in the darker corners, it references some of the worst atrocities committed by humankind. Lovely.
I couldn't censor it or tone it down as that would have been pointless. It has a number of messages and themes about human behaviour towards each other, towards ourselves, behaviour through history and also in relation to the consumption of art and "what sells". It took me over a year to get this one right, but I am happy that what I have created remains true to the original intention of the piece and my feelings, even if it is a little uncomfortable. This piece will be exhibited in Folkestone from March (I'll update on that next month).
NEW WORK (unfinished): PIN THE TALE OF WOE ON THE DONKEY (they)
Not quite finished yet so the photo here shows work in progress.
This will be an edition of 2 only. Neon on direct printed aluminium in deep aluminium frame. Includes donkey tail plug. This will be exhibited for the first time at the Rise Gallery show mentioned below from 9th February.
This piece is all about responsibility and "who is to blame?". It looks at individual and collective responsibility and the interrelationship of multiple factors in influencing our lives today. This one is a departure from my signature typed text background style, as I wrote each of the background words instead (via a graphics pad). I'll be doing more like this in future, as the start of a new series.
