Eudunda Tradie Josh Fenton Wins Top Awards

Story: Peter Herriman
While covering the story of the Eudunda Caravan Park progress (see Issue #40) another great treasure was unearthed. Proprietor of Earthworks company Craig Fenton Contracting was beaming with pride as his son Josh had the previous night won several major industrial awards.

Josh was quite modest about his win, surprised and delighted all at the one time.

Josh said,
"The Civil Contractors Federation of Australia SA Industry and Training Award presentations were at the Adelaide Oval, upstairs with well over 300 people and Brenton Ragless presented both my awards.

While presenting the Harry Wauer Trophy Brenton said
"the Future of South Australia's Workforce is right there in front of him".

"That to me was awesome considering where I have come from (a small country company) compared to where some of those in the room have come from." continued a very humble Josh.

Josh is very proud to win the Harry Wauer Memorial Award which honours the year’s most outstanding civil construction trainee, and then to win the National Award, both on the night as awesome.

Heavy Vehicle Bypass Construction Under Way

Photo and Story by Peter Herriman
Some residents may have regularly walked this area as part of their fitness program but for the majority of residents the area in the photo is one that most would not see in normal going about their lives.
The area is actually part of the old Eudunda Railway Line and many residents may fondly remember the 'Last Train Ride to Robertstown' to celebrate the Closing of the Railway Line to Passenger Services.

There is a new life for the area, as it is becoming part of the new section of the "Heavy Vehicle Bypass" for Eudunda.  It is one of the reforms from a 90-day transport project which has already saved the agricultural industry more than $50 million in transport costs.
The bypass will link the Worlds End and Thiele highways, filling a missing link in the State’s 26-metre B-double heavy vehicle network. It will also upgrade access to the Viterra silo and bunker sites.

You can read more here at Stephen Mullighan - News Release

The new road will eventually extend the existing truck bypass of the  "Three Chain Road" to join the Thiele Highway near the Eudunda Fauna Park, with that intersection yet to be started.

Samuel Speaks at Eudunda Probus for April

The week before ANZAC Day commemorations we invited Samuel Doering who in 2016 received a Premiers Spirit of ANZAC school prize,  together with other South Australian Year 11 students were chosen to visit Vietnam.  Samuel’s history was on Private J.C. Jensen who was born in Denmark and migrated to South Australia, working on boats and lived at Morgan for 2 years, became a naturalized Australian in 1914 and joined the 10th battalion on March 23rd 1915 and was stationed at Gallipoli.  He won a Victoria Cross and returning to South Australia worked at Truro Hotel and married the managers daughter.  We viewed photos on the big screen thanks to the Hall Committee.  Samuel explained that 8 students visited Vietnam and showed us photos of some of the placed he visited.  Samuel also told us and showed some cruel war stories – Iron triangle soldiers hide out, camouflaged tunnels and dangerous spikes, also such as generations have been effected by Agent Orange.  They were fortunate to visit Presidents Palace where they could view the crowded streets and many French buildings and churches, food preparation etc.  The talk was well presented and interesting.  Vice President, Fay was very happy presented Samuel with a Probus pen as a thank you for his in dept talk.
Thank you to the Hall Committee for providing the Big screen and to Luke Herriman for organising to set up and helping Samuel.
The next meeting on the 17th May will have Elizabeth Young speak on Child Care Support.
