What is Days for Girls Gold Coast?

Days for Girls Gold Coast is a group of volunteers working as part of an international organisation that provides quality sustainable feminine hygiene kits and awareness to girls living in poverty in over 75 countries. Without access to sanitary supplies, some girls use leaves, mattress stuffing, newspaper, cornhusks - anything they can find, but still miss up to 2 months of school each year. Volunteers are needed to cut and trace patterns, sew or overlock, pack kits or to assist with fundraising. We are pleased to be doing this in conjunction with the Rotary E-Club of NextGen, Queensland.

Welcome

Welcome to this very first monthly newsletter for the Days for Girls Gold Coast Team.

The dream to be part of this project started at the 2014 Rotary International Convention in Sydney and after a few aborted starts, the project was finally launched earlier this year when we were officially recognised as the Days for Girls Gold Coast Team by the Days for Girls organisation.

To be part of the launch of a new team is so exciting and I am so grateful for the help that has been provided by not only the Rotary e-club of NextGen but many individuals outside of Rotary and the future is bright.

In the future, I will be asking people to take on various roles and I would love any assistance that can be provided - so if you would like to do more, then please put your hand up!

Donations

Right now, we are desperately short of fabric so if you know of anyone who is a sewer that has a supply of fabric that they don't need, then please ask them if they would consider donating to the project. The shields require fabric to be 100% Cotton (quilters cotton is ideal) but the bags can be a mix of poly cotton. We can't use rubber backed curtaining or prints with animals, faces or camo.

Our Wish List

We have been approached by several places that would love to receive our beautiuful kits. These include two requests from Cambodia, two requests for Vanuatu and for one India. One of the possible Cambodian projects is requesting 500 kits - a big order to fill but I am sure that we can do it by working together.
It was great being able to hold our first sewing day at the Lynne Richardson Community Centre in Molendinar at no cost.

We can only do this when the hall is not required for a paying customer and this does make it hard to plan too far ahead.

If you have any contacts and can organise a venue that can be used, then this would be a great help as we are  finding it hard to book the next sewing day at this stage!

Sharing the Love

We need support in many ways but publicity is a biggie! If you haven't already done so, then please make sure that you like the Days for Girls Gold Coast Facebook page.

You can also invite your Facebook friends to like the page but please also share any requests for help.

We are about to do a knicker drive that you will see on Facebook in the near future where we will be looking for 500 pairs of knickers to be donated so this will be a great one. You can also send on this newsletter to any friends that want to be involved.

Thank You!!!

Everyone that has been involved is amazing. So far, we have collected 100 soaps, 90 knickers (that aren't included in our target of 500), 90 face washers and metres and metres of fabric.

Our volunteers have been sewing at home and we so far have 50 bags, 50 liners and 20 shields. A great start!

The Rotary e-Club of NextGen - based here on the Gold Coast - have been great and kick started the project with a $300 donation and expressed their willingness to provide further support. These funds have been used to buy the Snaps machine, the waterproof fabric, knickers and other fabric.

Exciting news that we have recently been contacted by doTERRA offering assistance with the project. doTERRA have been heavily involved with the US team and recently held a sewing and packing day with their staff in which 1,000 kits were packed in the one day. Looking forward to working with them.
