This afternoon, a 58 year old Hispanic man and a 58 year old Caucasian woman who were both bystanders, were shot at the corner of Windsor and Sheridan in what police describe as a gang-related shooting. Video footage from a police camera (placed there last year) will be reviewed to capture the person responsible for this senseless act.

As I've said before, I'm asking all residents to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity that they believe needs immediate attention by the police. Even if you're not sure about making a call, it's fine to call 911 and let the operator assess what the next steps should be.

There are things we all can do to address the culture of violence we see today in Chicago and across this nation. First and foremost, we must pressure our federal and state legislators to pass gun law reform; the ease of access to guns is appalling and our elected leaders MUST do everything possible to place more restrictions on gun access.

This Friday, I will be joining others to commemorate the work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and a group of 700 civil rights activists, religious leaders, and courageous community members who marched across the city to Chicago's Marquette Park where they confronted thousands of violent protesters who hurled rocks, bottles at them. We must continue that message of peace.
