~ New Oil Sketches ~

I've always loved painting on paper. Something happens in my psyche when working on this humble surface that relieves me of all expectations.

At the moment, I'm obsessed with Yupo paper, in particular. It's a synthetic, slick surface that doesn't buckle under the weight of paint and preserves brushwork beautifully.

It's like working with butter on silk.

Many of these new paintings are midnight meditations.

After the bustle of the day, when my household has gone to sleep, I come to my easel searching for a quiet space.

All of my imagery is inspired by real encounters.

I've painted many of these models from life and draw on that experience to push a painting beyond its photo reference.

These oil sketches capture everything I want from an alla prima session: fresh, loose, painterly, expressive.

Seeing the white of the paper peek between the brushstrokes gives me chills.

Many thanks to Linda, Kirsten, Brittany, and Chris for purchasing sketches and ordering custom pieces!

~ New Studio Paintings & Partnerships ~

I am now a participating artist and advisor to Portrait Connection, a non-profit whose mission is to gift fine art portraits to the families of children struggling with serious health conditions.

My first painting for Portait Connection is of a little fella born with Lissencephaly. I expected this painting to be a difficult one -- dealing with the painful emotions evoked by a sick child and the pressure of this painting's role in this family's life -- but the exact opposite was true. There's so much joy and spirit in him that the painting came together almost effortlessly.  I think his happiness is a reflection of how well-loved he is and so I wanted to capture that feeling in his portrait.

I can't think of a more meaningful or rewarding avenue for my life's work than to create joyful, healing artwork.

This painting will be unveiled and presented to the family at Portrait Connection's Inaugural Event April 6th, 2018.
