DOMINICAN FAMILY,

Congratulations to our Boys and Girls volleyball teams for earning their Conference Championships, as well as the cast and crew of Steel Magnolias! The talent we have at Dominican is simply amazing! We are super proud of all of our students who are participating in a fall sport or theatre performance and incredibly grateful for our wonderful coaches and theatre directors. Bravo Dominican!

This week marks the conclusion of Quarter 1! It seems to have flown by so quickly. This eblast provides information regarding Parent Teacher Conferences which will occur at the end of October. We always pray for 100% parent attendance at conferences and hope this will be the year we will hit that mark!

Wishing you a wonderful October. We are so thankful for the many blessings you and your children bring to our school community every day.

God’s blessings,
Dominican Faculty & Staff

STUDENT SUPERVISION OF BELONGINGS

Over the past few weeks especially, it has been such an exciting time to be a Dominican Knight! Homecoming, sporting events, theatre performances and service opportunities have given our students a variety of ways to get involved and really enjoy the Dominican experience. These events have also welcomed community members as well as fans from opposing teams to join us in the building.

What we have been noticing lately is that our students are leaving their backpacks and other belongings unattended in open areas during these highly attended events. While we have utmost faith and trust in our students and families that the personal belongings of our students are always safe from theft at Dominican, we cannot guarantee this, most especially while events are occurring at night.

Parents, please help us remind your student to be responsible and keep an eye on their belongings after their respective sport or theater practice has concluded.

CLUB OPPORTUNITIES AT DOMINICAN HIGH SCHOOL

Dominican launched its student club program in September. The club moderators and school counselors have continued to encourage all students to consider joining a student club. Clubs meet during our lunch/flex hour or before school on Late Start Wednesdays. Students who are unsure about how to join a club should contact their Counselor (9th & 10th Grader – Mr. Shutta and 11 & 12th Grade – Mrs. Guillen). The following clubs will be offered this year:  Student Council, Campus Ministry & Social Justice, Campus Ministry & Liturgy, Veritas Team, National Honor Society, National Arts Honor Society, Multicultural Club, Latino Fuego, Black Heritage Club, Photography, Robotics, Rock Climbing, RedGen, Entrepreneurship Club, and Investment Club.

FISERV TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM INFORMATIONAL MEETING

A few weeks ago, we sent out a survey asking families to respond with their level of interest in participating in the FISERV Forum tuition assistance program. Based off responses we received, we are confident we will have enough interest to continue with the program.

There will be an important informational meeting on October 18 at Dominican High School.  The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. in the board room. If you plan to participate in the FISERV program, please be at this meeting.

THEATRE & ARTS

Isaac Rice ’22 recently attended a weeklong event called Guitar Sessions at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Isaac's ensemble headlined Berklee's Performance Center during a concert on the final night.

DOMINICAN BAND AND CHOIR FALL CONCERT – THURSDAY OCTOBER 14TH

The Dominican band and choir concert is on Thursday, October 14th at 7:30 p.m. in the James & Virginia Wheeler Auditorium. Their performance will be dedicated to the displaced musicians of Afghanistan. Concert attendees should be aware that Dominican is also hosting a Volleyball game. Parking may be scarce, so we encourage people to arrive early.

We hope you can join us for this special performance! The performance will also be live streamed.

THINKING ABOUT PURSUING A DEGREE IN ART? ATTEND A NATIONAL PORTFOLIO DAY!

If you are even thinking about the possibility of pursuing a degree in the visual arts, you should definitely attend a National Portfolio Day! This is an opportunity for students to meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and is designed to help further the artistic development of young artists by bringing together experienced college representatives to review artwork and offer feedback on student work and portfolios for college admission.

This year, the NPD Association is offering both in-person events as well as virtual meetings. The next, closest, *IN-PERSON* events are Sunday October 17th from 12-4 p.m. at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), and Sunday, October 24th from 1-5 p.m. at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD). The soonest *VIRTUAL* event is on Saturday, October 30th from 1-5 p.m.

You can register online and view the event information here. See Ms. Janzer with any questions!

AFTER-SCHOOL STUDY HALL

Dominican’s After-School Study Hall runs from 3:30PM-4:45PM  each day.  The study hall is for students that are awaiting a ride or who are waiting for an activity to begin.  By 4:45PM all students must exit the building and we ask that parents arrange for their students to be picked up by that end time.  Please note that if your student is not awaiting a ride, or is in an after-school activity that it is best that they are picked up by 3:30PM.

Please note that the After-School Study Hall will not be available on the following dates in October:

  • Thursday, October 21

  • Friday, October 29

Please arrange for your student to exit the building at the end of the school day on these dates.  If there is an urgent need for your student to be in the building past 3:30PM on these dates please contact our Dean of Students, Vinnie Murray at vmurray@dominicanhighschool.com.  Mr. Murray would be happy to find a monitored space for a small group of students who may be awaiting a ride.

AFTERSCHOOL/EVENT STUDENT SUPERVISION AT DOMINICAN – 2021-2022

We strongly encourage all students to depart from Dominican at the conclusion of the school day at 3:05 p.m. For students who are awaiting their extra-curricular to begin or for their ride home, we are offering a supervised after-school area in our cafeteria from 3:15-4:30 p.m. At 4:30 p.m, all students will need to either report to their extra-curricular activity or exit the building.

For students who remain at Dominican more than 20 minutes following the conclusion of the 4:30 p.m. supervision period or the end time of their respective extracurricular, their respective parents will be charged a $25 supervision fee per every 20 minutes, payable to Dominican High School. We understand emergency situations occur. Parents must let the supervisor of their child’s respective activity know about a conflict with the designated pick up time as soon as possible. Parents have the discretion to instruct their child to exit the school property in lieu of being charged the supervision fee.

If your family has supervision needs past 4:30 p.m., please contact Dean of Students, Mr. Murray: vmurray@dominicanhighschool.com.
