DECEMBER 13 - NORMAL DAY OF SCHOOL

Dominican has made an adjustment to its school calendar for Monday, December 13th.  Parents may have seen that date listed as an “On-Line Exam Prep” day in earlier versions of our school calendar.    This date was held in reserve as we anticipated potential COVID-19 health scenarios that included higher levels of quarantined and absent students. We are pleased to report that Dominican has experienced a reduced number of virtual learning experiences and quarantines this year.

Dominican now expects that all student exams will occur in an in-person setting from December 20-22.  As a result, the planned "On-Line Exam Prep" day is no longer needed to prepare students for virtual testing.  Monday, December 13 will return to a normal school day for all students and faculty.

NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY DIA DE LOS MUERTOS OFRENDA/DISPLAY

Thank you to the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) members who participated and worked hard the last couple weeks to create this year’s beautiful Día de los Muertos Ofrenda (Day of the Dead altar)! Junior Izze Rosenberg headed the committee, with the help of other members including Aria Gresham, Jazlyn Carlos, Bri Harrison, Myley Rambousek, Natividad Gonzalez Marin, Sophia Tapia Rojas, Angel Cleveland, Lucia Sammarco, Lexi Buerosse, and Mary Jo Falk. Spanish classes also participated by creating Memento Mori messages, which were scattered throughout the ofrenda as well.

Please enjoy the display, located in the outer-concourse, until the week after the Baile.

CERAMICS RAKU FIELD TRIP TO UWM

On November 5, Ceramics I classes took a field trip to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Ceramics department to learn about and complete a special type of glaze-firing process called “Raku.”

Raku ware (楽焼 raku-yaki) is an ancient type of Japanese pottery traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. The clay pieces are removed from the hot kiln when they reach maximum temperature (about 1,000 degrees F), and are intentionally started on fire and then starved of oxygen immediately. The intense chemical process results in very unique-looking glaze results that can never be predicted or exactly replicated.

Students were given a demonstration of this firing process from professor Michael Ware, as well as glazed their own individual raku pieces, and received a tour of UWM’s Art department from professor Kathryn Martin-Muerer. Students had so much fun and learned a lot as well!

AFTERSCHOOL/EVENT STUDENT SUPERVISION AT DOMINICAN – 2021-2022

We strongly encourage all students to depart from Dominican at the conclusion of the school day at 3:05 p.m. For students who are awaiting their extra-curricular to begin or for their ride home, we are offering a supervised after-school area in our cafeteria from 3:15-4:30 p.m. At 4:30 p.m, all students will need to either report to their extra-curricular activity or exit the building.

For students who remain at Dominican more than 20 minutes following the conclusion of the 4:30 p.m. supervision period or the end time of their respective extracurricular, their respective parents will be charged a $25 supervision fee per every 20 minutes, payable to Dominican High School. We understand emergency situations occur. Parents must let the supervisor of their child’s respective activity know about a conflict with the designated pick up time as soon as possible. Parents have the discretion to instruct their child to exit the school property in lieu of being charged the supervision fee.

If your family has supervision needs past 4:30 p.m., please contact Dean of Students, Mr. Murray: vmurray@dominicanhighschool.com.
