De Royan Newsletter 2015 | Festive Greetings
Warmer weather and longer days are upon us and comes as a beautiful preparation to the coming holidays and festivities. If you believe that you decorate a Christmas tree a month before Christmas day – your tree is probably taking pride of place in your home already. The purpose of the tree and the decorations is to celebrate the feast of Christmas and by putting them up early, we anticipate the feast. There is a lot to say about anticipation: shopping lists, meal planners and gift lists are being compiled, and the rush to the end of the year is tactile all around us. It is also a time of contemplation: a stock take of sorts, and in our case, a summary of the highlights of the past year.
RELEASE CELEBRATION
There is no better way to end a busy year than with our old and new wine friends and family. The weekend of 14-15 November saw the Lelienfontein homestead gardens transformed into a chic outdoor lounge with a leisurely cellar tasting journey, a Pinot Gris wine theatre session, food stations, live music and enough distraction to keep the children playfully occupied.

This annual event, now in its 6th year, showcases our new releases and is a unique opportunity to connect with food and wine in this special space. If you want to make sure that you don`t miss this special occasion, save the date for next year! 12-13 November 2016.

DE BOS FAIRTRADE CABERNET SAUVIGNON WARMING FINLAND'S HEARTS AND PALATES
We are extremely pleased to report that our De Bos Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 – listed in faraway Finland  is doing a wonderful job in telling the Bosman Adama and Fairtrade stories. We also received wonderful press in the Helsingin Sanomat, the biggest daily newspaper in Finland, which features a special weekly Food and Wine section on Thursdays.

The journalist of this feature, Mr. Jouko Mykkänen, one of the most prominent sommeliers and wine educators in his country, writes the following of the De Bos Cabernet Sauvignon: “One of the best wines in this style and price category. Lovely aromas of cherries and roasted coffee. A full-bodied, balanced wine. A clear, warm taste with an abundant and full mouth feeling. Perfect wine for those cold and dark evenings, also to be enjoyed with stews, casseroles and cheese.”

So even in the cold northern hemisphere, De Bos will be prominent on Christmas feast tables – albeit in a different way to our own sunny holiday season.
BOSMAN ADAMA RED MAKING INROADS IN THE UK
To all our wine friends in the UK, Adama Red has arrived to a Majestic store close to you. As a wine which is appropriate in a fine gourmet environment and at home with a special meal, check into a local Majestic to experience the generosity of South Africa in a glass.

Mathew Jukes had the following to say about it in his column in the Daily Mail:

“I spent a week in the Cape in September and this was one of the stand-out reds. A heroic blend of Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault, Viognier and Primitivo. The huge presence and intense black fruit has a dusting of coffee beans on the nose; makes Adama an enormous amount of wine for a tenner!”
LOCAL PLATTER GUIDE RECOGNITION
Just as one always anticipates the colour of the annual Platter guide (for the upcoming holidays it's quite aptly described as "the colour of a cooling sea breeze") the wait for our ratings is over. We are happy to share with you the results of the Platter classification of our wines in their newly released 2016 guide:
  • 4.5 stars: Optenhorst Chenin Blanc 2014
  • 4 stars: Fides Orange Wine 2014, MCC Steen 2012, Erfenis 2012 & Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE - THE SEASON THAT HAS BEEN THE PREPARATION TO HARVEST 2016
In Wellington we recorded only 50% of our long-term winter rainfall. Even though we had lower rainfall and warmer temperatures in August and September we were very pleased with even budding.

Since the beginning of November we have been vigilant as some visual signs of water stress had been reported, necessitating earlier irrigation. It seems as if the 2016 harvest will be another record year but as we have no insight to events such as hail, rain and heat waves, just time will tell.

In the Upper-Hemel-en-Aarde valley the total precipitation has been ample and we had rainfall during spring and the beginning of summer. Conditions at this stage are very positive for a special 2016 Walker Bay harvest.
EPILOGUE
As we bid 2015 farewell, I would like to give my sincere thanks to our team, our wine club members, clients near and far and associates who have made this year memorable. Wishing you and yours holidays which are merry and bright and a 2016 filled with much hope and love.

Corlea
