Dean's Monthly Message

I have fantastic news to share with you! On Wednesday, February 22, Mr. Tommy Baker and Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa, USAF (Retired) signed a gift agreement to name the School the Tommy & Victoria Baker School of Business.

This gift will be truly transformational. Not only does it mean that funding from the various gift endowments will support our programs and students but it means, as well, a huge endorsement from a successful couple who have decided to invest so much in our School.

Anthony Von Mickle

Finance Club’s Real Money Portfolio Outperforms the S&P 500

One of the most important extracurricular activities in the financial services pathway is the management of The Citadel Financial Management Association’s (FMA) real money portfolio. The FMA (formerly known as the Finance Club) established a real-money portfolio in 1993 with $5,000 in seed money which largely went unmanaged until 2013. For the past three years, the student members of the FMA have actively managed the fund under the supervision of faculty advisor, Dr. Iordanis Karagiannidis, an assistant professor of finance.

MBA Students
are Shuckin’

Enjoying early spring weather in the middle of February, The Citadel School of Business MBA Association hosted MBA students, graduates, faculty, CSB Mentors, and friends of the School to its 7th Annual MBAA Oyster Roast.  

More than 70 friends enjoyed oysters, BBQ, and sides provided by Eric Britton at the foot of the Ravenel Bridge at Mount Pleasant’s Sweetgrass Pavilion. Conversation flowed freely as shuckers popped open the oysters and enjoyed the Lowcountry delicacy.

Keynote Speakers include the Retired Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Corporate Directors and the Chairman, President and CEO of Southern Company

Mr. Kenneth Daly, Retired Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) is the scheduled keynote speaker at CDI 2017. The opening speaker is Mr. Thomas A. (Tom) Fanning, Chairman, President and CEO of Southern Company.  Mr. Fanning also serves as chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and chairman of the Edison Electric Institute.

Three Major Citadel Events Planned for March

Three of the most important events occurring each spring at The Citadel will come together to comprise one momentous weekend in 2017. The 10th Annual Principled Leadership Symposium, Corps Day, and Recognition Day for The Citadel Class of 2020 will all take place March 16 – 19.

Congratulations to the follow CSB cadets for being named to the Fall 2016 President List: Forest Alexander, George Carbaugh, Anthony Caroso, Devon Chatman, Edward Frasier, Gregory Krueger, Hunter Kuykendall, Gene Morris, Gerald Rickenbaker, Richard Snyder and Joseph Wendling
Professor Cindy Bolt has co-authored the paper “Uncovering Majority Shareholder Fraud in a Closely Held Corporation” in Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting. (Vol. 8, No. 3; July-December, 2016).  Additionally, she co-authored the article “Highlights of Managerial Accounting Research” in Journal of Accountancy (December 2016).
Dr. Richard Ebeling delivered the lecture "Globalization and the Free Society" at the University of the Bahamas on Feb. 22. After his presentation (and to Dr. Ebeling's complete surprise) the Director of the Nassau Institute, Rick Lowe, presented him with the Nassau Institute Freedom Award in "Recognition of Untiring Efforts to Advance the Cause of Liberty and Raise the Level of Public Policy Debate in the Bahamas and Around the World."


Dr. William H. Money and co-author Stephen J. Cohen (Microsoft) have had their research paper, “A Framework for Smart City Applications’ Standardization: a Way Forward,” accepted for presentation at the 2017 World Wide Web Conference which will be held in Perth, Western Australia from  April 3-7.

Dr. Sykes Willford has been named a Senior Advisor to Access Corporate Finance in London.
