Epiphany 2020
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better” Ephesians 1:17
It was a cold January evening and I sat in a circle along with 12 other followers of Jesus who were embarking together in a 15 week course to grow in small group leadership.  Our leader opened our get to know you time with this question “When did God become more than a three letter word to you?” I was surprised when more than half the participants shared when they had made a commitment to practice of tithing that God’s nearness and involvement in their lives was revealed to them in new and profound ways.  That night I was inspired to talk about giving in a whole new way.   Their testimony highlighted that giving isn’t just about meeting needs, but more clearly seeing and experiencing God as our provider.  When they committed to a lifestyle that highlighted their dependence on God, their faith grew, their hearts were touched, and they knew that God was indeed real and faithful.
Today some Christian traditions celebrate Epiphany- the 12th day after Christmas.  The word epiphany means “revelation” and usually the Gospel passages of the visit of the Wise Men or Jesus’ Baptism are explored.   Both these events of the Wise Men’s visit and Jesus’ Baptism are important moments when Jesus identity was “revealed” to those around Him in a new way.
As you enter into 2020 how do you hope to see Jesus more clearly?  Encountering Jesus is the deepest desire of every human heart.  It is the revelation of His Lordship and saving grace that changes everything.  The way we respond to life’s challenges.  What we long for the most.  How we spend our time and money.  Where we discover our joy.  I think that when the Wise Men encounter the infant Jesus and laid their gifts before him that they were satisfied.  They had undertaken a tremendous journey.  Faced dangers and customs different than their own. Yet encountering the Lord Jesus made every sacrifice worthwhile.
My prayer for everyone who reads this note is the same as the Apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesians “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better” (1:17).
Among other events, Sean and I are finalizing preparations for our children’s ministry event in Honduras later this month (January 16-31).  We will be ministering to children in 3 remote villages and teaching about the Life of King David.  The cry of David’s heart was to know God better.  He said it this way in Psalm 27:4, “One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.” This will be our theme verse for the series of lessons.  While we are at our remote Honduras base we will also be finishing details for our large medical event that will be happening at the end of February.  Sean will be Mr. Fix it again, his first task being to restore the functionality of our satellite internet (again).  Would you pray for us in these endeavors?

Prayer Requests

  1. We would have deep unity with our Honduran teammates
  2. Each child who comes to VBS would be touched by God’s love
  3. We would stay healthy
  4. Have traveling mercies (it takes 3 days in and 3 days out)
  5. God’s hand to be upon our family in our absence
Would you also prayerfully consider giving in a new or increased way?  We are seeking to cover a $800-$1000 gap in our monthly support so that we can be fully funded.  We are so blessed by the team of prayer warriors and financial supporters with whom God has surrounded us.  We truly see God’s handiwork each month as He provides through our partners and in other unexpected ways.  You are a revelation of Jesus’ presence to us and we pray that as you give to the work of Christ’s Kingdom that you encounter Jesus profound and beautiful ways.
With love and blessings for the New Year!
