ARCS Pittsburgh Board Brief:

November 2016-January 2017

Our cumulative donations to scholars at CMU and Pitt exceeds $1.7 Million.  Thank you to all of our women-philanthropist members!
ARCS Pittsburgh Board Brief gets an update!
Email newsletters allow our ARCS Community more easily to read about what's happening in our chapter.  No longer will you have to download a pdf newsletter; you can see your newsletter as soon as you open your email.... on your computer or smart phone!  ALSO, you'll see embedded "live links" that enable you to click on and get to the link without having to type it in.  This makes it easier for you to go to our website, buy a ticket to an event, or send an email to the recommended individual.  We hope you take advantage of this new format, and please let us know how we could improve our newsletter by sending an email to Pam Meadowcroft.  Just click on this link:  pmeadowcroft1@gmail.com.
Achieve the Mission: Linda Burke, Membership Chair, describing the benefits of ARCS membership and the ARCS Mission: advancing science and technology in the United States by providing financial awards to academically outstanding U.S. citizens studying to complete degrees in science, engineering and medical research.  We are a community of women philanthropists who believe in keeping the U.S. scientifically competitive.
Enjoy our Scholars: Michelle Heusser, 2nd year scholar at Pitt's Cognition and Sensorimotor Integration Lab (Bioengineering/Neuroscience), with her Named Award ARCS Member Donors.  A unique benefit to members is getting to know our remarkable scholars, their areas of research, and their interests outside of the lab. Michele is an accomplished French Horn musician as well as a neuroscientist. You will hear more about all of our multi-talented scholars at our April 4th's Scholar Celebration at the Priory Grand Hall.  Go online to purchase your tickets now!
Learn through our Educational Programs:
Dr. Jodi Forlizzi, professor in CMU's Computer-Human Interaction Institute, and Kathy Testoni, ARCS Co-President, at November's Lecture on Robots and Human Interaction.  Dr. Forlizzi spoke about her expertise as a "design" specialist in improving the interfaces between humans and computers.  Think of Alexa or Roomba this year... in a few more years, much more helpful and endearing computer-human interfaces will be available.
Educational Programs:

A large crowd of members and guests attended the November program on the design of robots as well as scholars Michelle Heusser and Diana Zhang, and new members Liz Gillette, Ph.D. (with her husband Glenn), Phyllis Coontz, Ph.D., Anoo Verghis, and Marion Keyes. We look forward to seeing all of our new members at the exciting upcoming events, including those new members who attended the November event as well as Heather Chronis, Camille Goern, Carolyn Hauser, Joan Nilson, Pat Schwotzer, and Audrey Zelkovic.  Welcome to ARCS Pittsburgh!

Our next educational program on February 24, 10AM-noon (an optioinal group lunch locally will follow), will be at the Millvale Croatian Church of St. Nicholas for a lecture on the science of restoring the unique Murals of Maxo Vanka.  The 25 unique murals covering 11,000 square feet and painted in the 1930s and 1940s are considered a national cultural treasure.  Using newly developed technologies (nanoparticles to stabilize efflorescence from water seepage), the conservator team has  brought the murals back to life. Watch for your Paperless Post invitations.
Scholars Shelby Hemker and Michael Craig, mingling with ARCS Members at the Donor Appreciation Fall 2016. Go to our website, arcsfoundation.org, and click on the Pittsburgh Chapter to see the speeches they gave that evening.  Supporting our scholars is how we achieve our mission.  Don't forget to share your unused event tickets with our scholars by contacting Leslie Dunn, Scholar Relations Chair, dunnlo@upmc.edu with your information.
December and January ARCS Board Meetings Highlights:
  • Finances: Each January we determine the funds we have available for supporting, for three years, new scholars for the upcoming fall semester.  We were pleased to approve funding for 7 scholars for Fall 2017, 3 at Pitt and 4 at CMU. We have an additional $207,000 in our Scholar Fund committed to our current 17 scholars for the completion of their three-year awards in the coming years.  Our Endowment Fund is $75,300.
  • Fund Development: We're developing a list of corporate contacts to encourage our local community to be supporters of our scholars.   Thank you to those who have sent to Fund Development Chair, Missy Unkovic, these contacts.  If you have additional ones, want to assist, or have questions, please email her at munkov@verizon.net. Another way to contribute to the Scholar Fund is designating  ARCS Pittsburgh as your charity for an Amazon donation and then they'll contribute .5% of all your purchases.  For details click  http://smile.amazon.com/ch/57-1173984. Thank you!
  • ARCS National has completed a long-range planning process including reducing the size of the board and approving the hiring of a management firm to enable increased efficiency, effectiveness, and growth.
  • The ARCS website has been totally revamped. Board members received an orientation to the new site. Please go to arcsfoundation.org to see what's happening not only in our Pittsburgh Chapter but around the country. If you have any questions, contact ARCS member extraordinaire Beth Wainwright (Website/Database Administrator) bethwainwright@gmail.com.
  • The Nominating Committee is hard at work filling a variety of board positions that will be opening at the end of our year (June 31, 2017).  Most positions are two year terms.  Many are very flexible regarding volunteer time and talent. PLEASE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN LEARNING more about the board and the positions, contact Annie Rivers, anniesrivers@yahoo.com.  Being a member of the board is a great way to learn more about ARCS, develop stronger connections with our university partners, and forge relationships with other like-minded women philanthropists.
We continue to build excitement for our Annual Scholar Celebration, to be held April 4, 2017 6:00PM at the Grand Hall of the Priory.  Last year's format (time with all of the scholars; event-auctions focused on the talents of our scholars; great food and wine, valet parking, lovely setting) was a big success with a turnout larger than in many years.  We'll repeat the format adding more decorative appeal, more information about our scholars and even more exciting event-scholar-auctions.   We generated half a scholar award from last year which we hope to exceed this year.  Bring your friends and if they are prospective member, receive a ticket discount! Be sure to respond to your paper invitations when you receive them in February. OR go to our website now to register for the event (click here)!
