Mama, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Emo Cowboys

Hello friends,

Like a good film student, I watched The Searchers in college. I'd never seen a John Wayne movie before. I'll spare you the plot details but the movie end with this lonesome shot of Wayne exiting to wander the western prairie alone. And after 2+ hours with a jingoistic, racist, homicidal lone wolf, I found myself elated and sympathetic to this final image of the solitary male figure. With such a markedly hideous person, how did I end up going "ohhh, that's kinda cool"? How is that the ideal mental landscape for men to inhabit?

Admittedly, the movie might've been more interesting but "meh" if it ended with what the character really needed - some friends, affection, and prescriptive meds.

For this final episode of Other Men Need Help's first season, we look at the ways I romanticized the solitary walk of masculinity in this ode to temporary lifesaving friendships, Fellini, and mental/dental health. It's a beautiful finale to a bonkers inaugural season.

Season two will come to you in 2018. For the time being, we'll be taking January off and will return in February in a monthly format with bonus episodes, short films, and lots of surprises. See you in the New Year, my sociable cowboys and cowgirls.

Happy Holidays,

This is the first season OMNH team. The majority of our production meetings were held at Juniors. It's in Downtown Brooklyn and they're known for cheesecakes. We would share a cheesecake at the end of every meeting, but we ate a bathtub amount of splitpea soup. Splitpea soup is good and if you hear GREAT IDEAS in these episodes, we'd like to thank the soup. Also, pickled veggies. All in all, we owe a lot to these smiling faces and the warming qualities of deli grub in in Brooklyn production hub. Happy New Year!
Our friend, Vanessa Valerio is finishing the year with a live episode of her show Singleling featuring Mark in an appearance from a live show in Philadelphia! Vanessa's the best. She really is. She started the show about two years ago and has expanded it to include a national tour of live shows and stories from very disparate and unique tellers. You can catch all the episodes here or you know, do some searching on your podcast app. Keep an eye out - she might have some live shows coming your way in 2018.
