Mental Health Awareness Week: Nature

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week and Barnet Wellbeing Service had a fantastic timetable of extra activities and events going on throughout the week from many of the partner organisations and others teams in Barnet. Most of these resources and recordings will remain on the website for you to read and benefit from. The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness week was nature. As Spring finally warms up and we can start meeting friends and family; there is no better time to get out into the fresh air. The Mental Health Foundation has some fantastic tips on how to best connect with nature and make the most of it.
Dementia Action Week

Dementia Action Week is a national event that aims to improve the lives of people affected by dementia. This year Barnet Public Health has joined forces with Age UK Barnet and other partners to focus on reducing the risk of dementia. As we are gradually coming out of lockdown, we are now encouraging people to try something new. The idea is challenging your brain and learning new things as an important way to protect yourself from cognitive decline. Throughout the week, Age UK will be putting on a host of online and face to face events and activities for over 55s – a great opportunity to try something you’ve never done before.

The NHS Long Term Plan makes commitments to tackle inequalities in several areas of health care across different populations, including for people with mental health concerns. The COVID-19 pandemic and the wider governmental and societal response have brought mental health inequalities into sharp focus. The NHS in Barnet want to hear from residents and community groups in Barnet, and work together to co-produce our local borough plan. Please fill in the survey here.
Sing for Better Breathing

Experience the benefits of professionally led physical and vocal exercises designed to support those with lung conditions to develop and sustain a healthy body and mind. These sessions are free to those living within the London Borough of Barnet thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Community Fund and CommUNITY Barnet. Sessions run from May 2021 on Tuesday mornings at 11am on Zoom for 60 mins, including peer support and social time. This singing group is designed to benefit people living with a long-term lung condition such as COPD, asthma and pulmonary fibrosis. Those with long Covid are also welcome to attend. You do not need any singing experience or musical ability to join in, and everyone is welcome. Register your interest for our 2021 online sessions below. Change Grow Live

How has your drinking consumption been affected during lockdown? Over the last year, many of us may have been relying on alcohol or other substances to help get through what has been a stressful and upsetting time. Figures have shown that more people are dying from alcohol related illness. If you are worried about your own drinking or that of a loved one; there are some great resources nationally; e.g. from the NHS or Drink Aware. In Barnet, you can refer yourself to Change Grow Live who will be able to actively support you reduce or stop your drinking.
Vaccinations in Barnet and North Central London

The NHS are inviting people aged 38 or older to book a life-saving Covid vaccine. If you're in this group, a frontline health & social care worker, carer, have a learning disability, are at 'moderate' or 'high' risk to #COVID19, you can book online here or call 119.
