Introduction and News from our CEO, Julie Pal

The start of April was marked by the Multifaith Service held in Westminster Abbey following the attack in the heart of London on 22 March.  As you know CommUNITY Barnet co-chairs the Communities Together Network and some of you may have seen the statement that was produced by Barnet’s strategic partners.  Barnet’s faith communities play an important role in gluing us together and I hope as many of you as possible will be able to attend the 'Celebration Barnet: Unity in the Community' on Sunday 14th May at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre, Watling Avenue HA8 0NP between 12.00pm – 5.00pm. The festival will have at its heart, music, dance, sport, food, entertainment and exhibitions to showcase the rich source of diversity of people, currently living in the Borough and it is really important that we are all seen standing together in the face of terror.

Phillip Hammond’s first budget since becoming Chancellor presented a Budget otherwise low on announcements for the VCSE sector, £20 million will be made available to tackle domestic violence and abuse against women and girls; and a range of women’s charities across the UK will collectively benefit from £12 million as previously announced in the 2016 Autumn Statement. The Chancellor also announced £5 million for projects to celebrate the Representation of the People Act 1918 – the centenary of women first getting the vote – and to educate young people about its significance. The Government’s forthcoming green paper to ‘put the social care system on a more secure and sustainable long-term footing’ will also give the VCSE sector an opportunity to contribute to future government plans in that area.

Charities may potentially benefit from the £300 million fund to provide discretionary relief on business rates, but John Hemming, chair of the Charity Tax Group cautioned this would contribute further to the “postcode lottery” that exists for charities in this area.

Charity leaders reacted to the Spring Budget with disappointment. ACEVO chief executive Vicky Browning said “…whilst there is a nod towards civil society and the third sector, the Government does not seem to fully understand the depth and breadth of the skill and expertise which exist in civil society organisations.”

I hope you have all enjoyed the Easter Break and have come back refreshed and ready to embrace opportunities, realise ambitions or start to deliver brand new services.  CommUNITY Barnet would like to wish all of our charity partners delivering partnership libraries every success as we start to see local organisations directly delivering different services to Barnet residents.

Are You Ready for The General Data Protection Regulation Changes Next Year?

We need to understand and prepare for the General Data Protection Regulations which will come into effect on 28 May 2018.  A free guide to help charities understand GDPR and comply with data protection law has been published which may be of assistance. GDPR; the General Data Protection Regulation is a new EU law governing data protection, which will supersede the Data Protection Act in 2018. GDPR will not introduce widespread changes to existing law, but will increase the monetary penalties for non-compliance.

The new guide, Fundraising and Data Protection: A Survival Guide for the Uninitiated, has been published by consultant Tim Turner, a former policy manager at the Information Commissioner’s Office, who has been highly critical of charities’ understanding of data protection, and of the Institute of Fundraising’s guidance and approach.

Sobering stuff but something we all need to be aware of.
