To best serve our county and to provide the best lead education, we would greatly appreciate if you complete our brief survey on your knowledge and awareness of lead.

Elementary Updates

Career Week & Careers on Wheels

The first full week of May was Career Week at Banford Elementary! We had electricians, a home construction and renovation business, a pharmacist, a nurse, a college professor, a veterinarian, bankers and more. Thank you to all who shared their careers with our students!

Despite the weather, our intrepid students seemed to really enjoy Careers on Wheels! Many thanks to the drivers and presenters for sharing their time even with less than ideal weather. It was great to see what some of the career options were. And kids were thrilled to eat ice cream, even in the rain! Kudos and appreciation to Mrs. Glasgow, our parents group and volunteers, and to Mr. Stevens for all they did for our kids for this event!

STEM Festival

Banford Elementary held a STEM Festival and Book Fair on Thursday, May 16. The projects were really great! There are over 100 displays in our festival this year! Kudos to our budding scientists and engineers!

Middle School Dispatch

Green Team

Green Team marched in the Dairy Princess Parade. Instead of candy, they distributed milkweed seeds, donated by Kim Ayrassian, in an effort to help with the conservation of the monarch butterfly.

Environmental Impacts

Clarkson University, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Canton Central have teamed up to teach students about the environmental impacts of food waste and the science of anaerobic food digestion. Students are placing their food scraps in collection bins, which are being transported to a food digester at the CCE Learning Farm. There, the byproduct of methane is used to heat their greenhouse, and the resulting fertilizer is used to enrich their gardens.
Canton’s Environmental Club and Green Team are supporting the project with educational presentations, informational posters, and volunteers to supervise and assist with food collection. Recently, the sixth grade took a field trip to CCE to visit the digester, where they saw the rest of process in action.
Thanks to the cafeteria staff and custodians for their efforts to make this project a success!
*This partnership project is funded by a grant from Constellation Energy.

Liberty Partnerships Program

LPP (Liberty Partnerships Program) students from Canton attended a spring book club at St. Lawrence University.  LPP students involved in book club read Mark Manske's book Adventures with Stoney. Mark gave a presentation on his book and brought along his owl friends. SLU student volunteers organized activities based on the book following the presentation.

High School Happenings

Canton's Envirothon Team won our regional competition at Paul Smiths and went on to State competition at Geneva placing eighth among all schools in the state, including some private schools.  Environmental topics included forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife and sustainable agriculture.  Team members were Daniel Laddison, Cooper Stuntz, Abby Seeger, Hannah Tupper and Jacob Tyler.

Canton's Environmental Science class also recently toured the Greenwood Farm to observe milk production, farm efficiency and the methane digester.  Another trip focused on small scale food production at Little Grasse Community Supported Agriculture farm.  Thanks to our local farmers for educating our students.
