"They're Not Crazy, They're Adolescents: What Parents Should Know about the Teen Brain and Substance Use”

presented by Dr. Sion Kim Harris Free and open to all interested adults

Monday, Nov 16, 2020 7:30 PM online (Scroll down to find Zoom link posted at end of announcement)

As our children move into adolescence they begin to encounter situations where they have to make choices – especially during this time of social distancing and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As much as teens are given strict limits to keep them safe from covid-19, there may still be social situations taking place. Good guidance ahead of time from the adults in their life is critically important so they make good choices, especially when it comes to vaping, underage drinking and substance use. This presentation will allow you to learn from an expert the latest scientific research on the impact of vaping, underage drinking, and other substances on the teen brain. This information will help you have more confident and effective conversations with your children. Concerns about the higher risk for complications should a person who vapes contract the coronavirus will be addressed.

About our Presenter:
Dr. Sion Kim Harris is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and the Director of the Boston Children's Hospital Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research. Dr. Harris will give you the latest science on the teen brain and substances ... as well as share ways parents can speak with their children. Sion Kim Harris, PhD CPH, received her doctorate from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 1996 from the Department of Health Policy and Management. She oversaw research and program evaluation projects related to Adolescent and School Health at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health until 1999, and then began a faculty position at Boston Children’s Hospital in the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine. She was founding Director of the Survey and Measurement Core of the Boston Children’s Hospital Clinical Research Program, providing consultation and mentoring to investigators throughout the hospital in the development and/or evaluation of numerous instruments for use in pediatric research. She is currently the CoDirector of the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research at Boston Children’s Hospital.
