It’s been an exciting 8 weeks back in Haiti. When we returned back from the states in January and went to church our wound care patient Donald, who had been attending church at Pastor Savine’s, had his whole family there! Over the past few weeks, it’s been sweet to see the community embrace his family. Donald has also been helping with our youth small group on Sunday nights and he attended a leadership conference that our home church, Richland Creek came in and taught. He was so excited to learn all that they had to teach. When I would see him in the afternoons for wound care, he couldn’t wait to tell me about all that he had learned! It’s so exciting to see Donald grow in his faith. It’s hard to believe just a year ago he was saved. I remember him being frustrated with not healing and wanting to go see this doctor he had heard about. I was pretty convinced it was a Voodoo doctor and I tried to persuade him not to go. He was insistent, so I went with him. We weren’t there very long before I knew that’s exactly what this doctor was. I tried to pry and look for the open door to share the gospel, but the guy knew that this white person there was there with a purpose. He would not give an inch. With two armed guys in the room with us, I knew it was time to exit. After arriving back at the clinic, I talked with Donald, he said “Momma Gwyn you’re not Haitian, you just don’t understand.” That was a valid point so I asked him to talk with Pastor Savine. He agreed and two hours later; Donald was saved. Seeing new believers grow in the Lord is one of my favorite things. To watch new believers take off that old self and put on their new self is a process that never gets old.

It’s been an exciting month in our clinics. We’ve had two people get saved! One was one of our malnutrition mamas. She had been coming for about 6 weeks. Her son was not gaining consistent weight and I had warned her several times. I give them enough calories every week that they should gain on average .20kg every week. I really was ready to release her because she didn’t seem to be following our protocol, but I knew her story and my heart just broke for her. I had a team at clinic and I asked the Pastor’s wife if she would counsel with her. You see, this mom had 4 kids one of which is special needs. She lost her husband in the earthquake. She had been kidnapped, raped, gotten pregnant and contracted HIV. Chelsea, the pastor’s wife, said it was the most genuine salvation conversation she had ever had in Haiti. She also has started coming to our church! You can see the transformation in her whole demeanor! I respect the women in Haiti so much. Most of them work so hard under such difficult conditions. I’m so glad Christ is making such a difference in her life.

This past week we had a wound care patient come in and he had fallen in a drunken stupor and he had quite a few stitches.  After further conversation, we found out that his wife had recently died and he was grieving her death. During one of his bandages changes, I turned the conversation to who Jesus was and asked him did he have a relationship with him. He said he was a butcher in Haiti and that they cook and drink the blood of the animals they slaughter. I asked him was that a voodoo ritual; he said no, but he thought that he couldn’t be saved because of that. I shared with him some scriptures, shared a New Testament with him and the truth of the gospel. He said he would go home and read. So when he came back a few days later for wound care one of our teams members shared the gospel again and he prayed to receive Christ! God never ceases to amaze me how he works in and through our ministry in Haiti. It’s such a joy to see someone come to Christ and to disciple them. Troy spoke with him again this week and he says he is coming to our church!
