Malnutrition

For 6 weeks, God has allowed us to enter one of the most volatile areas in Port Au Prince to minister to the people there with our malnutrition clinic. Troy and I believe, the Lord led us there because about 65-70% of the people we were treating in our existing clinic were coming from this poverty stricken area. God has allowed a partnership with Luken Foundation and it’s because of Luken Ern and his relationships in this city which has allowed us to go into this area.

When I have time to reflect on all that God is doing, He always amazes me with the lengths he goes to use us to accomplish His will. I’m just blown away! It’s such a privilege to be used by Him to do His work. Most folks, who know Haiti, deemed us “crazy” to try and go into this area. Heck, to be honest, I didn’t want to go there because I know how dangerous it can be. But we believe this is where God wanted this 2nd malnutrition clinic. Since it took almost two years for it to happen, I was weary that maybe we had misunderstood God; however, He was just saying, “Wait, in my time!”

About a week a go, we admitted 5 new kids into our program that were below negative 3 standard deviations. We have charts that we measure kids weekly; we look at their age, height, weight and we measure their upper arm circumference. This is how we determine how malnourished they are. In Cite Soliel, I’ve been trying to first admit those kids that are at the greatest risk. All of these 5 kids were below the lowest point on my chart. We are at the heart of where so many of our kids were coming from. In my 41/2 years of treating malnutrition, I’ve only ever had to readmit 1 kid out of the 475 kids we’ve treated. I believe that’s proof that this program works!

Another partnership, that we are grateful for is Middle Ground. They treat inpatient malnutrition. About 3 weeks go, I sent them a little boy who had come into our clinic and was severely malnourished. His protein deficiency had him swollen from head to toe. I wasn’t sure if he would make it, but God did a miracle through Middle Ground and this kid looks great! It doesn’t even look like the same kid!

Why use malnutrition to help further the Gospel? It fills a great need here, and we get to see these parents for 8-12 weeks. This gives us an opportunity to poor into them and their children with education about how to better care for their kids and we get to share the gospel with them and hopefully, begin a relationship that will allow us to speak truth into their lives with the Word of God. With the malnutrition clinic, we get to fill a need here that is so great by helping the families with Ready to Use Therapeutic Food. But we also get to feed them the truth from God’s Word.

We’re so grateful for the partnerships that God has brought along side of us. We couldn’t do this without them. We’re also thankful for all of you who pray for us and give so that we can do this ministry. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. ~ Gwyn

Miracles Happen

Recently, I’ve been walking through the book of Matthew; I can never seem to get over all the miracles Jesus performs in the Gospels. He heals the sick, leprosy, the crippled, casts out demons, calms the storm, raises the dead, makes the blind see and so much more. I’ve watched God do some amazing things here. I’ve watched many endure incredible pain with open sores. I’ve seen God heal an open wound with maggots in it and the man restored. I’ve seen a guy with 65% of his leg burnt and he healed.

I’ve watched God provide money for Meredith with she was starting the malnutrition clinic. I remember she had raised $200 and another missionary was staying with us and he was asking her what she thought God was calling her to do here in Haiti. She told him about wanting to start a malnutrition clinic. He reached in his pocket and gave her $500 and he told her to watch God multiply the money. We went down to purchase the first Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) for our malnutrition clinic. She had enough money to buy 10 cases. When we got there, we learned they were having a buy 1 get 1 free sale. God immediately multiplied that money. We were able to get 20 boxes of RUTF that day! They have never had that kind of sale again!

When the girls moved back to the states, they needed a car. God gave them one. They needed a place to stay and God provided a free place. They needed jobs and they had them almost immediately after they arrived in the states. Everything they needed, he provided.

In Haiti, we have to pay our rent yearly. I’ve seen God provide for that many times in just weeks. I’ve seen total strangers hand me money that I had just met in a coffee shop! When we got our truck, in just six short weeks less than 25 people gave over $26,000. That’s a miracle y’all!

Just a few weeks ago. I needed to order the RUTF for the malnutrition clinics. I really wanted to get as many as I could because the place we have to go get it is not the safest place in the world. I only had enough to get 10 cases which will last about 3 weeks. I started praying because I knew that God didn’t have us start this new clinic without providing for it. In just a few days, he answered my prayers overwhelmingly. God is so good. Never has he called me to do something and not equipped me or provided.

So many times, God has protected us from dangerous situations. I’ve met with a voodoo doctor before over a patient. He kept me safe. He has protected us in Cite Soleil. Our compound has been broken into and we were not harmed. Troy was robbed at gunpoint and he was okay. I would say, "yeah God is still in the business of doing miracles." Sometimes, we like to take credit or explain away the situation, but God is at work in our lives and yours! ~ Gwyn

This is Desaray. She is our intern this summer! We have throughly enjoyed her. Desaray is from our home town; her dad came for a week and helped us build a bunk bed and a cabinet for our new clinic. Desaray has been doing a gymnastic class with some local kids along with a Bible study. She has also been assisting us with clinics and wound care and helping me with a Creole children's curriculum for Pastor Savin's church and the new church plant in Onaville.
